Computer questions / Re: Can u have 2 many Anti-Virus?
« on: September 04, 2013, 07:16:31 am »
I have been using Free Avast! for several years on about 8 different computers that I deal with.   It works great, the only hang up is that once a year you have to take a moment to tell them you still want to use the Free version.

I also STRONGLY recommend to the people that I do computer work to use Malwarebytes Registered version.  It runs quietly in the back ground and works well with Avast and block a bunch of junk that tries to sneak in.  I keep a copy of SuperAntiSpyware on an emergency thumbdrive and also installed but not running all the time.  If I think I have stuck my browser into something I shouldnt have I can use it and Malwarebytes to run a sweep for adware, virus or bad cookies.

I watch Newegg sales and try to keep a couple copies of Malwarebytes  in the cabinet.  You can get them for under 15 bucks when on sale and its a lifetime registration, so no annual mystery withdrawals from the bank  ;D  When one of the family brings me a computer to fix, I just throw a copy on it for them  ::)

I keep a copy of CCleaner from Piriform.com installed and use it to clean up my browser cookies, Temp files, and registry every month or two.

For some reason Microsoft in the latest version of Internet Explorer (version 10) they decided they would set the rules on certain graphics and other modules.  The rest of the Web site building world kinda told them to stuff it.  I had to dump IE10 because many images were not showing up the way the should.

That and with Mozilla Firefox seeming to be way more stable than it use to be, I made the move back to Firefox for my main browser.  I still keep and use Chrome, and occasionally IE9 these days.

I guess the bottom line is if you dont like the way a website looks on IE, switch over to Chrome or Firefox and see if it behaves better for you there.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Rare Earth Magnets on Sale!
« on: August 02, 2013, 03:33:59 pm »
I have been looking for really small rare earth magnets, i.e., 1/8" or I/16" for lids on small boxes where the sides are only 1/4" or 1/8" thick.   Any suggestions?

Pieter

Pieter, believe it or not, Amazon has them, I got ,30 Neodymium Magnets 1/4 x 1/16 inch Disc N48 for $7.99 last month.  The sell all kinds of sizes and shapes.

Check out Michael's, they are also on line.  They sell a lot of craft boards and paints.
I have yet to find ANY BB listed on a Michaels website.  Nor do they sell anything online that I can see.  They dont even post prices so that you see what you are getting before you have to drive to a store.

IMHO they have the most bass ackward web presence that I have seen in years.

I havent had a chance to order anything from them, but I do like that they are 1 day UPS shipping from me, and the shipping fees dont seem too stiff.

And they do have interesting toys for us!

I liked that video on tool sharpening!  Going to snag that for future reviewing!

Mahendra,

Like I said, I cant draw a lick, but I can cut and paste!

Give that Paint.net a try!  I'm no expert with it by any stretch of my imagination but I do a passable hunt and peck.  And Google solves most questions if I need to learn a new trick with it!

Thanks Mike.

I had gotten some TINY Neodymium Magnets 1/4 x 1/16 inch Discs and last night I discovered they are a bit too small to use just one to get a good hold.
So I guess Im going to be ordering some that a bigger diameter.  I will have to check my Forstner bits and find one that matches my bits  ;D
I did use the old wood glue and wood shavings to set them in.  That seems to work ok.

I just did a Google search and here is the math on heat effects on Neodymium Magnets for anyone that is interested.   I guess the bottom line is, heat kills most things.

Thanks again for the heads up.  :)

Thanks Ray!  It looks like your spindle sander makes good flint marks.  Im trying to do it with my little 1" belt sander.  ATM its just a learning exercise, but still a hoot to play with for the first time.    I did look at those keychains, Interesting, do you know anyone that makes keychain parts with the split ring keychains?  I have never personally liked that style of clasp, they dont seem to want to hold up to a Man Sized ring full of keys  :o ... LOL

I did download Steve's arrowhead pattern, I should have some polymer clay in tomorrow, I want to try doing a couple of his with the clay to test and see how it works out.  I got 50 tiny hearing aid battery sized earth magnets in last week, I was thinking I could embed them in the clay and bake them so you dont see the magnet.

When I get done playing with the arrowheads I will have to post a couple if they work out.

OK Im still new at this and learning the ropes.  Also I cant draw a game of hangman without it looking like spaghetti on the floor...

I have some scrap pieces of pine and such that are a bit thicker than 1/2" that I was wanting to use to make a few arrowhead refridge magnets out of to both practice my cutting skills and also play around with shaping with my sanding equipment to get the feel of what I can and cant do shaping... (NO you are not going to get me into Intarsia!  ;D) Im getting tired of cutting kittens, puppies, pigs, ducks, etc!

Problem is I cant seem to find anything with a simple shape but that I can sand down to look more real, like flint arrowheads and such.

Does anyone have an arrowhead pattern they can post, Please??

Thanks!  :)

The paint.net isn't as powerful (or hard to use) as Adobe Photoshop, but it's good for most things I have needed to do.

The ability to layer is very nice when you want to make a template pattern and add stuff as needed like names and such, without having to redo the whole pattern.  I still haven't dipped my toes into the stuff you guys do converting pictures to patterns...

R
I finally bring  it to Corel Draw ,sort of resize to fit add my name, (you might laugh at this but this is the only way I know) convert it to  pdf ,go on line to convert pdf to Jpg. Once that done, if the file is big ,again reduce it to mailing size and that is about all I do. I sincerely hope that this answer makes sense,Ray :)

Mahendra

Mahendra,

First you do wonderful work, I love it!

Second a gift to you if you have to do all that just to resize or convert to a pdf.

http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp
This is CutePDF Writer, its free and not too hard to install, I have used it for years and it installs as an additional Printer in your system.  So if you have a document you want to convert to PDF just print it and select Cutepdf for your printer and it will allow you to save the document as a pdf on your computer.

The second is http://www.getpaint.net/ Paint.net  It is open source and will let you resize crop add layer etc and very easy to use, and save the image to any file format you want, Jpg bmp, png, etc.

Thanks again for all the wonderful work you do!  You are an artist!

Here's an idea... Paper magazines with online site and monthly online publications of bonus patterns, materials, etc.
OR publish electronically with mailed patterns to subscribers.

It would be nice to see them move into this century with publishing to take advantage of current technology.
