Introduce Yourself. / Re: Newbie from Downey, CA.

Rod, Welcome to the group. As far as craft shows, try contacting schools and churches in your area. Here in Ohio, that is were most of them take place. Most are around the Holidays. Past experience tells me to stay away from Flea Markets as people go to them to buy junk for very low prices. It is usually difficult to get your table money back at them.... have fun, Jeff in Ohio

Hi Laura and welcome to the group... I'm Jeff from Ohio, been scrolling about 40 years now. As was mentioned, it is addictive, I think my wife is setting me up for an intervention, LOL. Anyway, just to reiterate, imagine you want to cut the center out of a circle. Imagine this circle is 1/2 inch in diameter. Think about how wide the pin is on your pinned blades. Think about how wide the unpinned blades are. Which would require the smaller hole? As the diameter gets smaller, it eventually becomes to small for a hole to allow the pin to fit through, so you would have to go with the pinless blades. Besides, there are dozens of different blades that aren't pinned to choose from, but that will just get more confusing for you. For now, a few #2 and #5 blades would probably get you going until you feel confident enough to start a complex pattern, like next week...... Take care and have fun

Hi Dunk,

It was their customer service department that told me she did not have a list of the items on each disc, but that they SHOULD contain this or PROBABLY had this on it. When I asked again if there was a table of contents, she said NO, but if you buy it, you could find out what is on it..... not much help there. But, they were friendly....

Norm, I agree 100%. I have used and continue to use Steve's patterns and try to remember donations often. Just a great site with a great bunch of people.... I might add that I have been using Flying Dutchman blades for several months. I had used all of the others and think the FD blades give the best performance for price of any of them. Give the reverse spiral blades a try. It takes a bit to get used to, but using them for the Scrollers pictures sure make them easier.

Yes, Spirithorse, that's how it is... but, we DON"T have to bite the bullet.... we can say enough is enough and quite buying as many of those items as we can.... perhaps that is one way to show that we aren't going to put up with it any more.... and as long as Steve is around, we don't have to pay stupid prices for pieces of paper.....

Steve, I just wanted to thank you again for making all of your wonderful patterns free and downloadable. It never fails to amaze me what we are charged for sending pieces of paper through the mail.

I understand that companies have to make money, it stands to reason. BUT, let's not get carried away.  I ordered four 8x10 patterns from The Winfield Collection. The plans were reasonable at $4.95 each. HOWEVER, they charged $6.95 to MAIL them. Not ship, not special delivery, just to MAIL them. Now, if they use the excuse that someone has to put them in an envelope, okay. But unless you bring them in for EACH individual mailing, there is absolutely no reason MAILING should cost $6.95. And if you pay them for the mailing, this person would be making over $100 an hour at that rate. I knew ahead of time about the extreme cost of mailing, but didn't think for a moment that it would be that outrageous. The cost to put a piece of paper in a paper envelope and have the post office pick it up surely can't be as expensive as the time it took to design the pattern. This is like buying on EBAY were the part is $2.00 and shipping is $45 from China. But, it's done, I have the four patterns, and I can guarantee you I will not be buying from The Winfield Collection again.....

Great Joke... I'll have to remember that one....

One thing I've noticed (or maybe I'm just getting older and grumpy)....

No one seems to use their turn signals. I drive a school bus, and other than people cutting you off extremely short (no one wants behind a school bus) turn signals seem to be optional. One of my areas is called Safety Town (actually Coventry Crossing) and due to where it's located, it's referred to as Safety Town. Most residents are city Police and Firemen. On average, less than one out of ten use their signals, even though Ohio law requires it. If they are used, it's usually after you have waited for them to pass, only to find the signal come on at 3 feet from the turn (required at 100 feet). But, let you fail to use your's while they are waiting and you get the bird. So, let's hope your school teaches the proper use of turn signals....

I recently purchased the Woodimals puzzle pattern book and in the back, there is a listing for about 375 additional puzzle patterns. I went to the website "www.woodimals.com" and it turns out, FoxChapel Publishing now owns the rights to these patterns. That, in itself, is not a problem. The problem begins when I attempt to purchase a few of the patterns. I push all the proper buttons, and up come about 18 patterns, out of the 375 listed. Also listed are four DVD pattern discs. I really don't want to spend $30 on a DVD that may or may not have the patterns I want ( there is not way of knowing which fish patterns are on the "FISH" disc, no table of contents) nor do I wish to spend $145 for a collection of "all or most" of the patterns listed (again, no table of contents). I called FoxChapel Publishing and was told that they no longer offer individual patterns, but the DVD's SHOULD contain the patterns I want and the Expensive DVD PROBABLY contains all of the patterns listed. Is it just me, or is this how companies do business now days?

Anyhow, getting to the heart of the matter, does anyone know where I can get puzzle patterns for game fish such as Bass, Walleye, Bluegill, Crappie, Musky, and so on? Thanks for the help,  Jeff

I really enjoy making keychains with Steve's program... but..... if i want to make a 3D pattern, the ones that you fold over a piece of wood and cut it out on each side, I find that unless the words have the same number of letters, one is small and the other is huge. Is there a way to make both of them the same size? I can adjust the length using the sliders on the program, but the size of the actual cutout is very different.... thanks for the help, Jeff

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New Jet Saw Review

I tried and you're right. So, for me, the new jet isn't a step forward. With all the problems reported, it doesn't even seem to be step in any direction... but to each his own. I used to think my Craftsman vibrator saw was great....

I can agree with WoodLace, my local WoodCraft store in Oakwood Village says they will not carry the Jet saw. Seems when they went to the dealer show, even the Reps couldn't get it to work right. For that price, why not wait to see what the new Seyco saw costs. I mean, the ONLY advantage MAY BE the top clamp, but first reports are saying it isn't working the way is should. And, the bottom clamp is not tooless, so if you do a lot of sawing, you can expect your time to go way up when you have to remove the clamp to change the blade. But, to each his own....

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade feeding
« on: February 01, 2017, 04:59:33 pm »
I used to bottom feed, but got so tired of basically crawling under the project to find that tiny hole that I am now strictly a topee. I had a problem at first finding the big slot but then it dawned on me.... if the blade is straight, it will point right to the slot when you lower the arm. So, I simply start to lower the top arm, slide the blade through the hole, catch it on the bottom (to avoid the bent blade scenario) and clamp it. When you are working on large projects, bottom feeding is such a bother. As a topee, I will not be buying one of the new Jet's. The bottom clamp is not tooless and even changing blades becomes a hassle. The new Seyco seems to solve all the problems.
