Brag Forum / Paper Ornaments
« on: December 17, 2013, 12:07:57 am »
Needed something to give out at work, so got to looking at cutting paper and this is the results.  Cut card stock paper into 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" pieces (36 total) and 2 pieces of baltic birch 1/8" plywood for top and bottom.  used short screws along edges to make sure the paper was sandwiched and held in place, then just cut regular with #2 regular blades.  Cutting was MUCH slower, the paper makes it really solid cutting.  Took about 1.5 hrs to cut out, but came out with 36 paper ornaments and 2 wooden ones.  Made nice little something for everyone at work  ;)

Brag Forum / iPhone Passive Speaker
« on: December 16, 2013, 11:38:09 pm »
Been a while since on the site.  Thought would share this iPhone Passive Speaker.  Looked around the net and found different ways these have been made and made up my own pattern.  Used Forstner bits to do the holes progressively smaller and deeper.  Made of 3 pieces of wood, 2 pieces 3/4" Walnut and 1 piece not sure of the specific wood, some type of exotic that I had purchased a while back.  Middle piece of walnut has the groove in it for the sound to travel out to the holes.  Brass screws in the corners are more decoration now than when assembling.  Added the "H" (1/16" Slolid Brass) and .040 Copper to it for decoration and stability on the bottom.  Going to give as present at work for secret Santa gift.

Brag Forum / Another "creation"

Made this for a friend who owns a local restaurant...

block of wood is Curly Claro Walnut (has some excellent waves in it 8)) I can't remember for sure what the open/closed insert was, but I want to say Canary wood?  Address plate is cut from brass sheet and had it engraved at a local place in the mall.  The little crystals around the clock are hot fix Swarovski (clear) and the center of the clock is a hard drive platter with the roman numerals engraved by me.

Back has a custom made cover from regular walnut with 4 magnets in the corners over the corresponding screws to hold it on.  the "Thank You, Please come again" is cut from .050 PPW (pre-painted white) aluminum.  Hanging eyes are solid brass and had a black chain to hang it on.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Metal Cutting
« on: March 20, 2011, 11:20:14 pm »
Kind of a repost from http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=4871.0 that I started a while back, but thought some of the newer people would find useful.  My experience is cutting from Brass, Copper and Aluminum.  Most of my aluminum I have cut is .050 PPW (pre-painted white on one side).

Blades I use:  Jewelers Blades from Sloan's Woodshop (http://www.sloanswoodshop.com/scroll_saw_blades.htm).  Size 1-JW and 2-JW.  Most things I found cut the best with the 1-JW because it is smaller and turns the corners better without binding.  Saw is set at the lowest speed, which makes it kind of timely on thicker metals.  Most alum I have cut is .050 inches.  Make sure you tape both front and back (I just use masking tape) so it gives enough to lubricate the blade.  You will definitely break blades, but at $12.00 per gross, they are cheap compared to wood blades.  Can't push it much with those blades either or they will just break.  It's weird, but you can hear the pitch of the blade change just before it breaks.  I actually like cutting metals better since there really is no dust, but it makes a mess of the table and I usually have to clean it and rewax the table after doing it.

Note on the PPW Aluminum...Good thing about this is it comes with a protective plastic coating that you can spray on adhesive, stick the pattern on, cut it out and then peel the coating with pattern off very clean when done.  I purchased it from a semi-trailer manufacturer, since they use it for the sides of trailers and have lots of scrap pieces.

Only other thing I can think of right off on metals is you will have to sand the backs of all (leaves little burs that come off rather quick) and on brass and copper, sand with very fine grit to get a good shine and then spray with clear coat.  Otherwise, every time you touch with your finger, the oil in your hands will tarnish.  Also will tarnish in general in very short time.

Thanks for reading...comments welcome!  ;D

Here are a couple I have done.  Have done them out of brass, copper and aluminum.  Just wondered if anyone else does much in metal.

Brag Forum / I really need to finish some of these...
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:26:51 pm »
First set are Butterfly Clocks, one cedar and other curly maple...both with matching bases created from layers of flower petals from various woods.

Second are some misc clocks...

Third is a couple of Steve Good's Round Tea Lights (Thanks Steve) along with some clock inserts and a dog leash holder (minus hooks at this point).

Last is my variation of two of Steve's Business Card holders combined.  Base is Curly Maple, back is Walnut, "Scroll Saw Artist" is cut from copper and framed in Poplar w/Purpleheart border; and I think the business card holder itself is Bloodwood.

As you can tell...I really don't like the finishing of them as much as the cutting/modifications.

General Scroll Saw Talk / How would you finish this project?

Don't know the best way to seal and coat the whole thing without making it run.  Have thought about the lemon oil and clear coat over, but don't know if it will get into the fine lines.  Suggestions?  Thanks!

These were made for the past Mother's Day...cut from 1/4" Yellowheart.  Yes, was kind of hairy in the middle.  Didn't make the frames, purchased those from Hobby Lobby along with the backing.

Made these for Father's Day last year...wood on the clock is Curly Claro Walnut with a Curly Maple base.  Both have Westminster Chimes movements in them.  Pics are without the hands on as I was shipping them off after these pics.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Scrollsaw cabinet
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:55:37 pm »
Just an idea I had when I originally started sawing probably 10 years ago.

Sides are FRP (fiberglass reinforced plywood), which is not fun to cut!

Have modified it some by adding a fan that has a built in section for a 20x20x1 filter incorporated into it.  They don't make that model any more, so if it breaks, going to have to go back to the original with a box fan and filter, but that worked pretty well too.  The light above makes a lot of difference and have since added an aquarium pump with hose attached to the air blower since it has quit working.  Saw is bolted to the table with a piece of truck mud flap as a vibration barrier.  Still get some vibration nonetheless.

Attached a couple pictures as well

almost forgot, have mounted a power strip on the left inside of the cabinet and then run the cord out a hole in the side.
