The Coffee Shop / 5 December Sinterklaas
« on: December 05, 2010, 03:20:04 pm »
Hello,

in Holland we have a tradition on 5 December we celebrate the birthday of sinterklaas.
Sinterklaas is a holy man and the tradition tells that he's from Spain and he has servants called "zwarte piet" (black piet)

so 5 December is called "gifts night" and when you have young children they get a bag of gifts.
when the children are getting older there is a is a second tradition and people are making surprises to hide there gifts in. (like a pi?ata) and you have to make a poem that goes along with it.

we started with a gourmet meal and then get to te unwrapping.
my daughter made Perry the platypus from Phineas en Ferb, she called me  Dr. Doofenshmirtz in the poem because I have a dust cloak when sawing. :D (I like to watch Phineas en Ferb with them)
after we where ready unwrapping the surprises, there was an other surprise, my wife had bought presents for everyone.
because of the age of the children we decided not to buy presents, but she was our secret sinterklaas ;D

we had a great afternoon/night and is was "old-fashioned fun"

General Scroll Saw Talk / finishing fretwork
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:31:09 am »
I need some tips and tricks for finishing fretwork.
After oiling the wood I would like to put a clear coat lacker over the project.
what is the best way to do this?
I have "two problems", both related to each other.

First how do you lacker all the small insides, (with a brush?)
second how do you lacker the front/back without getting thick layers on all the edges?

The Coffee Shop / early as can be....
« on: October 02, 2010, 09:41:18 am »
Guess what I'm making.....

the famous Dutch "Oliebol"

this is a dutch tradition for new years eve.
actually in Holland we call it "old years eve/day"
it's a ball dough with raisins baked in oil.
some powdered-sugar on top......  8) .... delicious

due to the Autumn rain we get a bit of the Christmas feeling and we decided to make some.
I just mixed everything and I now wait until it's raised for about 45 min.

coming up next I make an other version (own recipe) filled with pork kebab.
my kids love this!!

I know I'm much to early but: let the Christmas season begin :D

maybe we put on a Christmas movie tonight

Ask Steve a question. / cable gremlins
« on: September 26, 2010, 07:04:45 am »
Hang in there Steve!
be patience and fight those little cable-gremlins
I know how frustrating it can be to fight "the system" and the only thing you can do is wait.
luckily most of us know this an we also know that in the end things will be working again.
getting angry or frustrated wouldn't do you good and it doesn't make things go any faster
consider this as some time off and try to enjoy the free time.

General Scroll Saw Talk / bookmark thickness
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:27:16 am »
I made my first bookmark from oak 0.26" thick.
I find the space between the moving part to narrow and I think that's because of the thickness of the wood.
I started to sand it down a bit but what should be the right thickness. ( to prevent the moving part from breaking)

Brag Forum / No bragging, just sharing
« on: September 17, 2010, 11:58:00 am »
last Sunday I heard that a friend/acquaintance had un-treatable lung cancer.
it was discovered a couple of weeks earlier.
I decide to make something this week to encourage and support him and his family.
I made a for a "pictureframe with a candle" design and it's made out of 1/4 oak.

The dutch phrase "sterke" means strength and his name is on top the picture frame.
I had a poem in my mind that to place in the frame, later on his wife can change it for his picture.

Today I was finished and I planed to bring it over this weekend.
Then this morning my daughter came home from school with a note that he had past away. (His daughter goes to the same school)

I gave it to his wife now, she can use all the strength she can get.

....... what a terrible, awful disease!!

So, notthing to brag, but I would share the story with you.

General Scroll Saw Talk / lacker over oil finish "problem"
« on: September 06, 2010, 06:47:24 am »
I usual oil or varnish my work.
I know that quit a lot of people finish up there work with a lacker or varnish over there lemon or linseed oiled wood.
I tried this to, so first I mixed some orange- and lineseed oil and put it on my work.
It was made of red cedar and apricot.
after drying for three weeks I varnished it with a clear lacker.
to put on the second layer of varnish I sanded it a bit and guess what, on some cedar parts the varnish came of real easy.
could it be that this is because of the type of wood or wasn't the oil not dry enough? ( I mean, three weeks?)

I like to hear some of your experience with oil an varnish.

Marcel
