Concerning the FREE Open Office.... Need Help.... :+(

Hi....  Have been having trouble OPENING different files. 
            When I click on Open and click on a Document to bring up I keep getting
This Window....  ASCII Filter Options....It has boxes to check for these....
                           character  set....
                            default font....
                              language....
                               paragraph break
     I just click on OK....  All that comes up is a bunch of numbers n letters that
      Don't make any since.  Is there a cure for my problem? 

                 I gave it a try and UNINSTALLED OPEN OFFICE AND THEN DOWNLOADED
                  IT AGAIN.  .............I have tried all I know....  Help....  Danny  :+(

Dan did you download the right version for your operating system? Linux, Unix mac, windows ????? just to name a few.

I have open office and have no problem[urlhttp://www.openoffice.org/][/url]

Thank you....King for replying to this problem. 
Have Windows 7 ....  Downloaded (yesterday) OPENOFFICE.ORG 3.4.1
                                                                   Apache Software Foundation
Have many saved files which WILL OPEN....  Just some that WILL NOT. 
           Sounds like I am missing something.  Oh yea I am basically a beginner.

you need to look to see how those other documents were saved example most word type documents are saved as (doc) file. If the files you are trying to open do they have a different extension on the file? You may need to open it in a different program.
