The Coffee Shop / EVE CHATS WITH GOD
« on: May 22, 2012, 09:54:54 pm »

Eve chats with God
"Lord, I have a problem."
"What is it, Eve?"
"I know that you created me and provided this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals, especially that hilarious snake, but I'm just not happy."
"And why is that Eve?"
"Lord, I'm lonely, and I'm sick to death of apples."
"Well, Eve, in that case I have a solution. I shall create a man for you."
"Man? What is that Lord?"
"A flawed creature with many bad traits. He'll lie, cheat and be vain. All in all he'll give you a hard time, but he'll be bigger and faster and will love to hunt, fish and bring you good things to eat. I'll create him in such a way that he will satisfy your physical needs. He will be witless and will revel in childish things like playing cards and knocking a ball around. He won't be as smart as you, so he will also need your advice to think properly."
"Sounds great," says Eve, with ironically raised eyebrows," but what's the catch?"
"Well,..... you can have him on one condition."
"And what's that Lord? "
"Well, since he'll be proud, arrogant and self-admiring, you'll have to let him believe that I made him first.
And it will have to be our little secret ..... you know, woman to woman."

Previously I mentioned I was looking for square/rectangle tubes for scroll saw blades.  Well, our friend Glenn from Belgium came through with this web site:  www.pennstateind.com     The company is in Philadelphia, PA, about 3 1/2 hour drive from my home.  What a good guy!   :) :)    I ordered their catalog.

The Coffee Shop / WHAT'S IN A NAME
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:31:03 pm »

A good looking man walked into an agent's office in Hollywood and said "I want to be a movie star." Tall, handsome and with experience on Broadway, he had the right credentials.

The agent asked, "What's your name?"
The guy said, "My name is  van Lesbian."
The agent said, "Sir, I hate to tell you, but in order to get into Hollywood , you are going to have to change your name."

"I will NOT change my name! The van Lesbian name is centuries old, I will not disrespect my grandfather by changing my name. Not ever."
The agent said, "Sir, I have worked in Hollywood for years... you will NEVER go far in Hollywood with a name like  van Lesbian! I'm telling you, you will HAVE TO change your name or I will not be able to represent you."

"So be it! I guess we will not do business together" the guy said and he left the agent's office.

FIVE YEARS LATER...... The agent opens an envelope sent to his office. Inside the envelope is a letter and a check for $50,000. The agent is awe-struck, who would possibly send him $50,000? He reads the letter enclosed...

"Dear Sir, Five years ago, I came into your office wanting to become an actor in Hollywood , you told me I needed to change my name. Determined to make it with my God-given birth name, I refused. You told me I would never make it in Hollywood with a name like  van Lesbian. After I left your office, I thought about what you said. I decided you were right. I had to change my name. I had too much pride to return to your office, so I signed with another agent. I would never have made it without changing my name, so the enclosed check is a token of my appreciation.

Thank you for your advice.

Sincerely,
Dick van Dyke

General Scroll Saw Talk / METAL CUTTING ON THE SCROLL SAW
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:12:57 pm »
A friend asked to cut a boat 'name pattern' out of metal sheets. They are two thin sheets of copper with a very hard metal core.  Total thickness about 1/16''  After some experimenting with different blades, without success,  I asked FD Mike for suggestions.  He recommended the FD-IM No. 5.  I'm happy to report they worked just fine. I sandwitched the metal between two sheets of 1/8'' ply and used medium blade speed and VERY slow material feed.   I've learned so much good stuff on this forum, I thought I should pass this along.   --Moonie

General Scroll Saw Talk / CUTTING METAL Tips Needed
« on: April 07, 2012, 04:53:53 pm »
I need some tips on cutting very thin sheets of copper.  They're about the thickness of stiff poster board.  I'll be cutting a boat's name out of the center.   I think I'll adhere the copper to plywood, so I can get a grip on it.  Probably use #5 metal cutting blade, but not sure about that.  Any suggetions?

The Coffee Shop / AFTER 40 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
« on: April 07, 2012, 04:46:27 pm »
After being married for 40 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said,
"Forty years ago we had a cheap house, a junk car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a
10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 23-year-old girl.

Now ... I have a $900,000.00 home, a $65,000.00 car, a nice big bed and a large screen TV,
but I'm sleeping with a 63-year-old woman. It seems to me that you're not holding
up your side of things."

My wife, being a very reasonable woman told me to go out and find a hot 23-year-old girl
and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap house, driving a junk car,
sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV.

Aren't older women great?  They really know how to solve an old guy's problems.

The Coffee Shop / Ray at Seyco a GOOD Man
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:23:51 pm »
I've read on this forum how Ray has helped fellow scrollers.  I now have personal experience.  I sent Ray an email about a problem with  my Ex 16. Although I purchased it  from a different company, Ray suggested I call him.  I called him and within a very short time he diagnosed and we fixed the issue.  Just wanted to acknoledge a good man.  -Moonie

A friend will soon have 30 years without a drink.   I need ... I don't know what ... a pattern celebrating 30 years in recovery.   The anniversary plate in Steve's pattern book is nice, but its too romantic, if you know what I mean.   Thanks, Moonie

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / BACKERS ON PLACQUES/PORTRAITS
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:07:15 pm »
I understand it's standard to use a backer on placques, etc.  Some use 1/4 inch BB and some use 1/8 inch.  In my opinion, I prefer to use black, or any color, poster board or heavy craft paper.  I've had great comments. Anyway, 1/8th inch always seem to warp. What are the advantages of using BB as compared to my alternative?
Thanks, Moonie

Ask Steve a question. / How to adjust blade motion on DeWalt 788
« on: April 29, 2011, 10:33:08 pm »
While cutting on the DeWalt 788, the work wants to jump up and down.  I saw your vedio on the Excaliber and you talked about how to make an adjustment to correct front/back motion.  My Excalber 16 is fine but  I think that front/back motion should be adjusted my the DeWalt.    Where do I find instructions on how to make adjustment on the Dewalt 788?   Also, how do I tell if I have a Type One  or  a Type Two?   Thank you.
