Title: Number Six Clock Build Log
Post by: malc on December 06, 2010, 08:36:40 am: Plans have arrived, just under two weeks from hawaii to UK. Excellent service. Clayton said allow 4-6 weeks. Plans run to eighteen pages plus eight pages of instructions. Will be spending the next few nights reading and rereading them! Will order the ply need later today. I will be posting my progress as I go along. I will also be keeping a detailed record of my progress plus hours spent which may be of help to any others mad enough to attempt one of these!

Post by: malc on December 09, 2010, 11:52:12 am: Here is the first wheel for the clock, it is the escapement wheel about eight inck diameter and cut to within 1/64 in. I promise not to bore you with each wheel cut, just thought you might like to see the first one.

Post by: malc on December 10, 2010, 09:04:49 am: I have cut the escape wheel pinion and the third wheel. Now comes the long work of getting the two to run together, it will involve slowly rotating the pair and removing any imperfections from their teeth then sanding each tooth with 400grit sandpaper and finally polishing each tooth, probably about four hours work.

The wheels are cut from 1/4 in and 1/2 in birch ply the frame will be from pine.

Post by: malc on December 14, 2010, 09:21:43 am: Some more bits! Escapement wheel stained, center wheel, third wheel, several pinions, wind click mechanism, pendulum rod and centre of pendulum bob, pendulum crutch. Still lot to do, then a lot of sanding and polishing.

That is the one thing that stops me from trying a clock. Just trying to keep all the teeth smooth and even so they will mesh would drive me to drink water!!

I just received the plans for the Celestial Mechanical Calendar. So far the plans are excellent, well thought out and clear.
I'm just beginning to lay out the frame and locate all of the arbor hole locations. I have to admit it is a little intimidating. I worry about being off in drilling an arbor hole by the slightest amount thinking about how that will ultimately effect the gear performance.
I will try to learn from your efforts!

Yes the arbor holes are vital. Before drilling I use a sharp spike to mark the EXACT centre of the hole then using a pillar drill to ensure a vertical hole I drill slowly using a GOOD QUALITY brad point drill. Any other way I can help I will, but bear in mind I am on a learning curve too!!!

First one I made was from pine and proved not to be strong enough as the thin curled arms running across the grain were too weak. I then cut another, as a test exercise out of MDF but it was 1mm out of square, this was enough to make the wheel arbors bind so no good. I have now cut one out of oak and this one is square! I will start fitting the gear train wheel by wheel and making adjustments as I go along. More news soon and HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!

I finished my frame using baltic birch ply. I'm currently making all the arbors and caps for the arbors. Following the plans on my project have me doing all of this before cutting my first gear, so there's no way to tell how accurate the frame is at this point. What the heck, I'm having lots of fun with it.

Post by: malc on January 11, 2011, 08:53:19 am: Coming along, nearly finished now, about a week of testing then it can be moved to it's final position. I think 'er indoors will be pleased to have my building jig out of the dining room! Time keeping is about two minutes a day at the moment but I know I can get it much better that that. I will post pictures of her when she is in situ on the wall. Note it is changing to a her as I become more endeared with her.

Post by: malc on January 14, 2011, 09:46:22 am: My task is complete! Clock now fully working and installed. I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as I have making it. Unfortunately I have now got the taste for clocks and am pouring over plans for the next one, a grandfather to stand in my hall. It is fitted with the complex 'Grasshopper' escapement and I think will test my scrolling skills to the limit. Final two videos are in this post.

During the entire build I never felt I was on my own. I hope to soon start on building my 'tertius' Grandfather clock with a 'grasshopper' escapement and will keep you informed of my progress.
