"Big Cats" is finished.....
« on: December 08, 2011, 04:02:48 pm »
well sort of!

I just took the pattern off and am waiting for the MS to dry out so I can do the final work of cutting it out and mounting in the frame on the black felt...
Pics will be delayed a few days - have to leave town for a couple days...

Final count...529 individual cuts.  Pic of final cutting...

Thanks again Grampa Paul for such a neat pattern!

That's beautiful GB! And a great pattern from Grampa. Will you draw the outline or will you cut the rest free hand?

On ll the other ones I have done a freehand pencil line to guide my cut.
I really don't feel confident just cutting it freehand. I will try to keep pretty much to the contour of the cutting itself.

GB, That turned out awesome!!! Looks very clean and professional.
I think you said you do your cuts, then turn it over to look at the picture. Is that how its suppose to be done? I've only done a few, but have used the side I was cutting as the picture. Is the backside better?
Again, Great job!!!

WOW - now thats what I call a nice piece of work, I'll be glad when I get half as good as that. What wood is it made with and how thick? when I improve a little I might just have to ask for a copy of the pattern (please )

The cats turned out beautiful. You have a lot more patience than I do.

I may think I have a great saw, but it wasn't made for fret work!!!  lol

Thank You, ladies and gentlemen for all the nice comments.

Al...I would give a lot to do Intarsia one-tenth as well as you!

Flipping...I drill 30 holes at a time and use that as a guide to give me frequent breaks. Each time I drill holes I flip the piece face down and lightly sand the back to get rid of any 'breakout' and to look at how I am progressing. It also helps me decide where the next group of cuts should be made.

The wood is 1/8" Red Oak plywood I got on special from WoodCraft. (Thanks for the tip, Dan)
I only made a stack of two...one for my daughter/son-in-law for
Christmas and if the bottom one turned out usable I will keep it for my collection. (it came out just fine)

I really like doing the animals and birds and especially Western/Native American portraits. I have some coming up after the holidays I think you will like.

In another thread I noted that I am not doing this as a new career but because I like this great hobby I found just a few years ago. This keeps my mind, hands and body active and I truly believe that if you don't Use It, you will lose it!

The encouragement I have received from my friends on this forum has caused me to stretch the limits I thought I had and I am learning and doing more than I had ever imagined I could when I bought that first saw.

Again...Thanks for the nice comments and for giving me a great hobby.
