Hello,
I'm Gary from north central Indiana. I have had a scroll saw for several years but just really started using it last fall. The patterns posted by Steve has really kept me busy. I feel my skill at scrolling has improved greatly since I purchased a Dewalt saw last September and started being a regular visitor here. I rate my skill level now as an advanced beginner. There is so much I would like to learn from all of you. I have found Scrollers to be a great group of people and love being one of them and a member of this forum.......Gary

I have tried intarsia, bowls and bandsaw boxes with the scroll saw with some limited success. I am soon to be 80 years old and find that with each illness, I am slowed down considerably.

I want to add my thanks and appreciation to Steve. Not many people would do what he does for free. And the few times he does charge a small fee, he is appologetic about it.

Hi everybody. I live in the beautiful Smokey Mtns. of North Georgia, USA. I've been scrolling for about 2 years (woodworking for 30) and I love it. Hi, from Petawawa, ON Canada. I have been scrolling now for about 5 years. I have not really found a single niche that i like to cut, other than seeing an idea, and making it a little different and practical. I enjoy making something more usefull than just wall art. But i do that too, when the urge hits me.
I will post a few of my different creations for viewing later.

Hi Steve, Thanks for everything you do for woodworkers.
Now a little about me; I love woodworking, fishing camping and spending time with my family. Just recently started back up woodworking, the STUPID things I did as a kid caught up with me. I've been fighting physical ailments. My
doctor actually suggested that I get back to woodworking. I'm far from a pro woodworker but I like to make sawdust fly. Looking forward to chatting with others about projects.
-

Hi Steve and everyone else, Osceola from the UK, not as popular here as in the US, which gives me a good exscuse to come over when ever I can and collect bits and pieces. Love Florida DC and Pa, Vegas when I can. Trouble with scrollsaw, too much to do, boxes, ornaments, pictures and so the list goes on, with not enough time to do them all. Other interests, fishing, riding my Harley and checking the web for holidays and scrollsaw items. Have a great day and thanks Steve for this site.

Hi Everyone. I have been lurking on this site for some time now and thought it was time to introduce myself. My name is Mike Dunk and I live in Barrie Ontario. I have been practicing retirement for 16 years and I am almost getting it right!
I am a wood carver who took up scrolling as another way to work with wood and I have fallen in love with the possibilities. I enjoy Steve's patterns and like doing portraits. I also enjoy doing miniature projects and am attaching three examples of my work. I have included a US and Canadian quarters (25 cent pieces) to give some idea of the scale.
Thank you Steve for this site and for all the work you put into it, it is appreciated.

Hi everyone, my name is Rick. I have only been scrolling for about a year, but I have really become hooked.
I presently live in Florida?????, but will be returning to NY as soon as I can sell my house. I am in NY now so I don't have access to my saw, which is about the only thing I miss about Florida, ONLY MY OPINION.
I'm back home in NY because my niece & her husband just had a beautiful baby boy this morning (7:50 AM), and we wanted to be here for the blessed event, WELCOME CONNER ANDREW. My wife & I have no children but have been very fortunate to be real close to my brothers two girls and this is really exciting. I an't wait to get to my saw so I can crank out the toys.
Thank you Steve for your blog and now for this site. I have been a follower of your posts and have enjoyed all your plan books, I know this will be a great site.
-

Thanks for the welcome message. I'm really looking forward to using the forum, although this is my first time on a website forum I hope to learn how to use it fast and talk to new friends.
I have to log off unfortunately but hope to make good use of the forum.
Thanks again.

This is the first forum I ever posted on. I look at a couple of others but this is where I get all my info. I have made some good friends here and enjoy the environment. It still seems a little weird to me that I call total strangers friends, but I get and send personal messages to several of the folks here. I have learned so much and feel very "at home" here. There are some great people on this forum and I hope you find a special niche here. Again, welcome.

Hi I go by Gabby, once you get to know me you'll know why. I look a bit like my avatar too!
I'm in S.W Oregon, and have been playing with wood for years, but am just now getting into scrolling. Checking local listings for a good saw I can afford on a pension. Oops gave away my age.
I'm just itching to do this, and can hardly wait to get started.
Looking forward to some new friends in this forum.

;D Hello to all fellow wood workers, my name is Darrin and i just bought my first scroll saw. and thanks to Steve, i have fixed some problems with the out of the box Craftsman scroll saw. the noise he points out is the screws for the air blower are to long and hit the upper arm under the plastic cover, other than that its a good machine for the buck. this is a great web site for all skill levels alot of info to really keep you busy. well thanks to you all who are interested. we can all help each other.
-
Welcome Darrin! Now that you have your saw and you've signed in here, you can pretty much kiss all your spare time goodbye. If you're not cuttin' something, you're probably here reading about cuttin' something! Enjoy!!!

Hello, I'm Gary (Graywolf) from Peru, IL.. I just started scrolling. A friend of mine gave me a Craftsman saw (an old one). I have wanted a scroll saw for a lot of years, but never got one. I am sure looking forward to using it. Woodworking has always been a hobby. Don't know if I enjoy woods or fishing the best?? ;D The past couple of years I have been building yard stuff, planters, etc. I am sure looking forward to learning the Scroll Saw. The first project I made is a hanging planter it turned out pretty good I thought. I am getting ready to make the "feathered Eagle" from the plans on this site. I am glad I found the site. I will have questions.
Thanks

This site looks like the place to get me started. We live just outside the entrance to Yosemite Nat. Park.. I do chainsaw carving, machining, welding ,etc. etc. but I have never done in scroll saw work. I am retired and raising and homeschooling an adopted son he is 12 years old soon to be 13. I thought scrolling would be a good place for him to start to learn the safe use of power equipment ( much safer than a rotating blade, chainsaw, or bandsaw) and to put his imagination to work and turn out a project at the same time. I have worked with my hands all my life building one thing and another and supporting my family and I hope to show my son that he to is capable of doing many things with his hands and mind with Gods help.To many kids stuck on TV and video games these days and as a result they don't develope their God given talents. I may be asking for some help along the way folks, so thanks in advance. Thanks also for the opportunity to join the group.

Thank you Steve, you all are an inspiration to me and hope someday i can give good advice as an experienced scroller

Hello, I am Pat from Maine. I found my fathers scroll saw under a work bench in his cellar. He passed 14 years ago, so I know it has been at least that long since the saw has been used. It is a 16" Craftsman with variable speed. Seems like a good starters saw. I have begun to cut out the simpliest of patterns. Looking forward to learning some tricks from the Scrollsaw Workshop
community to help me.

Hi Steve and all. Hope everyone had a great new year. I'm totally new to scrolling although I predominantly make pens on my lathe. I was looking to expand my hobby and found the World of Scrolling through this great site.
Now I've got two addictive hobbies and I dare not tell the wife I fancy a go at Pyrography. Maybe I could incorporate all three. As for equipment I have an entry level Scroll saw, Table saw, Band saw, Pillar drill, Belt come disc sander and my beloved Lathe. Oh and a kettle and a tin of biscuits for the obligatory British tea break which is the law over here.
So Surfing one night (Which is the only exercise I get ) I came across Steve's site and got hooked. with the free patterns I've made the Fairy Plant pot holder and some Xmas decorations. I've just down loaded and given a donation for the excellent Stencil printer. What I'm really interested in is the scroll portraits and I'm on the hunt for a freeware program that will make the B&W stencils. If anyone could point me in the general direction I would be grateful. Anyway hope to meet many like minded woodcutters. All the Best Shannow

Greetings One and All. Just an old retired guy in South Dakota that goes by Al, been working with wood for the last year, and I am finding I enjoy the scroll work as much, if not more, than other facets of the craft. Also spending a lot of time learning, and hope I never stop learning.
Looking forward to interacting with this forum, learning what I might, and passing on what knowledge I have obtained.
Gotta go shovel the snow, will be at the shop afterwards. Have a fine day.

Hello slotdrag, I am scrollingdesigns from Glendale AZ, and welcome to you. I have had a scroll saw for about 5 years but am just now starting to get more involved with it. It is sure relaxing for me to go out to the shop and make saw dust. Have a great day and enjoy scrolling. You will be amazed what you can do to a simple piece of wood.

Hi, my name is Troy. I am from Phoenix, AZ. I have not done too much wood work in my life. Most people who know me know I am not a "fix it" kind of guy. So this past Christmas when I told my wife I wanted a scroll saw, she couldn't believe it. Well, she gave me a saw all the same. Since then I have made a few nice projects. I am still new at it and slow at working, but I love my saw. This site has been the most help ever. Thanks for the blog and all the work that goes into it.
-
Hello Troy, glad you found us. Hi I'm Russ from Florida. Welcome to the Scrollsaw Forum. :)

Hello from Long Island,
My name is Tim. I just got started with scroll sawing. I always had an interest in it but never tried it. Well now I am.. I am enjoying leaning about it but learning and doing are two differnet things.
Being newer that a newbie, I admire you guys and your craftmanship.
I am about to retire soon and besides singing and writing Christian Rock n' Roll, I look foward making things for my 5 grandchildren.
one problem.... whenever I make something, I want to give it away. Is that normal?
-
Hi Tim, welcome to the forum, I'm Keith from Cornwall U.K.
In answer to your first problem, yes it is perfectly normal, I used to give all my work away, but as I improved I had to fight the family and girlfriend off so I could keep enough to take to craft fairs lol.
-
Glad you found us Tim. Hi I'm Russ from Florida. Welcome to the Scrollsaw Forum. Take your shoes off and jump in and get your feet wet. :)

Hello. My name is Vickie. I took a five year break from my saws. The last few months I have gotten back the urge to cut again. You see five years ago almost to the day my son was killed in Afghanistan. I didn't think I would ever cut again. Had I not continued to receive the emails from Steve Good I probably would never have gotten the desire to cut again. I look forward to chat with everyone.
-
Hello Vickie and welcome back to the addiction. I am so very sorry for your loss. I'm Julie from Texas. We are glad you've joined us.
-
G'Day Vickie, that is the great part about this forum, you get support in all manner of forms. Welcome back to scrolling.

Hi, My name is hangman. I am from Boulder, CO and have been making furniture and cabinets as a hobby for the past thirty years and just now thinking of taking up scroll sawing as a new hobby. Been researching all of the saws out there and leaning toward the DeWalt since I need to keep my initial investment in the more reasonable range. This site is wonderful.
Thanks,
-
Hello people; I'm new to the forum. About me-Toller, my handle, is from having had a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, toller for short. He was a fantastic dog. Actual identity Leo Weisman from Saint Charles, Missouri.
I'm only now trying to become good at using the scroll saw though have noodled around with them for many years and owned many. I now have a Delta 20" 40-694 Variable Speed Scroll Saw. I have found it helps to be a part of a woodworking community to move forward. I joined the St. Louis Woodworker's Guild www.slwg.org/ (http://www.slwg.org/) 2 years ago and learned of this forum from one of our masters in fretwork and every sanding method known to mankind. I'm at best a very experienced, knowledgeable, mediocre woodwork but that doesn't deter me. Seeing the members fretwork and pierced bowls, 3D ornaments and Intrasia have finally pulled me in.
So it is practice, practice practice; learning to follow a line and not crowd the blade, buying good blades and learning some amount of patience. As originally equipped, I didn't have any.
Glad to be able to join you

Hi. My name is David. I am from Decatur, Alabama. I am not new to woodworking, just fairly new to scrolling. I have started out with a cheaper machine, and I am finding out by trial and error what my machine is lacking. As my technique improves I hope to one day move up with my machine as well.

I am Jim Burk from Rapid City, SD. I just started into scroll saw work. I fellow worker told me about it and how she and her husband were in the Rapid City Woodworkers Club. My son bought himself and me memberships. This club spends most of the year making wooden toys to give to local kids. I have only attended one meeting and one workshop but I feel I am going to enjoy being part of this great organization.
I have always been interested in woodworking since taking woodshop in high school (we won't mention how long ago that was). I got into woodworking repurposing a door and antique table legs into a table for my son's wedding. I have built quite a few frames and even an oak door leaf table. The last two years I have really enjoyed wood burning. I started just burning but now I add color to the pictures. Most of what I have done has been for presents or donated for auction for fund raisers.
My biggest project so far was a grandfather clock made from white oak. It took 180 hours to do.
-
Hi, Jim,
Belonging to a wood-working group sounds like a lot of fun and should be quite beneficial also.
God Bless! Spirithorse

Hi Everyone! I am the newest newbie to probably hit this thread in a long time! My dad was, IMO, a master - his work back in the late 90s looked like wooden lace - it was beautiful! He was a carpenter by trade, and when he retired he found the scrollsaw and Victorian fretwork. His last scrollsaw was a DeWalt 788 and the one I just brought is, yep -- DeWalt 788! I didn't realize that until I ran across a photograph of my dad with his new saw.
My saw is still in the box, I'm waiting to unbox it when I find a stand that's reasonably priced (I have several Ebay watchlists going) Anyway, I hope to be able to at least do some cute things I have in mind and cut out some of the designs I've created with my new scroll saw. Hopefully, my dad will be watching over my shoulder to steer me.
I'm also in need of a scrollsaw mentor and Mr. Good's videos and his shop sort of reminded me of my dads shop --- so I'm ready for begin trolling the posts and looking for a wood sensei to help me find my timber-zen! ;D
-
Welcome to the forum!
Steve Good puts out a new pattern almost daily so, you will always have something to cut or something to inspire new ideas.
You can always ask questions and get some good answers and the members are knowledgeable, helpful, and non-judgmental.
Enjoy yourself, show us your projects and God Bless! Spirithorse

Garry from Pittsburgh Pa, thanks for the forum. was having a hard time getting started so much to learn. Not much progress so far. being 80 years old iss not helping but i am willing to try my best.
-
Garry, welcome to Steve's forum from another Gary looking at my early 70's in the rear view mirror. I am now a tortoise. I'm always slow and on good days making steady progress. I started scrolling a couple of years ago . If you are not using it, I would suggest Youtube on the net for countless tutorials on scrolling. Visual learning is so much faster for me. Regards > GLC in Cypress, Texas.

Greetings! I'm Joe Wolfe and I have been scrolling off and on since around 1995. After retiring in 2012 I have gotten more serious about the craft and thoroughly enjoy it. I am always looking to learn something new and challenge myself to get better at scrolling. I look to build on scrolling by adding intarsia to the projects I wish to make.
Two years ago I upgraded to a Seyco ST-21 after literally wearing out two entry level scroll saws. It has been a game changer for me.
My thanks to Steve for starting this forum and for all he does to promote this art form. He is a wealth of knowledge and has made me a better scroller through his blog and YouTube videos. I am here to learn. I am also willing to help any newcomers to scrolling if I am able. Feel free to reach out to me. Happy Scrolling!!
