Janet I got the pattern from scroll saw artist.com Sue May free patterns she have more patterns too.

Marshall the wood is pine I like to use it because is easy to cut  and whe I use stain looks great on it thanks for looking.

I just finished the same pattern and used a piece of oak, it was a little thick but it turned out OK.
