General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: CWC searchable data base?
« on: December 11, 2011, 08:14:53 am »
I was backtracking - trying to find the names of pattern designers for pieces I have cut but didn't note the issue or designer.  So, I have built a spreadsheet of these mag's, though some of 2011 not added yet.  It can be sorted alphabetically, but still depends on me entering the title of projects in a way I think I could find them again.  A really searchable index will be great.

Well your display is great and answered a question I have had regarding my own.  I was beginning to think I had too many different types of work to scroll work and folks were over-whelmed and tended to move on.  Apparently not.  Have to try something new...

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Any real advantage in an expensive saw
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:57:24 am »
I started with a really cheap saw and decided that I was not going to learn to scroll.  We returned it and bought the Delta from Lowes, which at that time was the great part of $200.  Wow - what a difference.  I used that for a number of years until I sold enough pieces to a gallery to buy a used Hegner from Craigslist for about 1/2 the new price.  WOW!!!!  Changed the arm for the one with the quick release at the front and added the flexible blower.  Amazing saw.  Last year I found a Hegner, again on Craigslist - for $200!  We exchanged emails and he verified it worked - he just wasn't interested is using it. I actually got it $200!! It is 12 years newer than my older one, included the light, stand  and foot pedal (which I don't use).  The table is more regularly shaped, and I switched the newer arm and blower from my older one.  This saw makes my older Hegner seem difficult to use.  It is AMAZING.  Now, can I follow a line any more accurately - well, um... at least I can't blame the saw any more.  I am still not great at many things, but scrolling is actually fun!  It runs as smooth as silk, and I have to set a timer so I don't sit for too long at a time.

All that said, I wouldn't want to pay full price for any of the new saws especially since it's my hobby.  Finding a super deal - now that's a different thing altogether!

FYI - I use Chrome as my browser and it translates the site.  There's an option at the top of the screen asking if you want to translate it or not.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Bad show

I hate that you had that experience.  I'm pretty frustrated with shows myself.  Had an opportunity to go to large business with mostly female employees over lunch. Unfortunately it was the day before payday.  Lots of interest and folks asking if I'd come again on a payday.  Fortunately the folks who scheduled me took pity on my and refunded most of my table fee, so mostly I just lost gas and time.

FD's Ultra Reverse and Superior Puzzle blades, and PSWood blades when I don't want reverse-teeth.

Glen, glad you are liking the blue painter's tape too.  There are at least two types of it - one has either a yellow or orange core and is termed something like delicate.  It leaves the least amount of residue, but you would not want to leave the tape for a long time or it won't hold.  I haven't had any problems with it for any length of project but some folks prepare a bunch of things to cut ahead of time and that might be a problem.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New Hegner Model????

FYI - the Advanced Machinery site does not mention a new scroll saw.  That doesn't mean there isn't one, but they seem to usually have info on the Hegner products. (www,advmachinery.com)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New Hegner Model????
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:08:53 am »
I must be doing something different with my Hegner because I really don't have a complaint about the bottom clamp.  The only time I deal with reclamping a blade into the bottom clamp is when I install a new blade.  When I am only changing to a new entry hole in a piece I pop the blade and holder out of the bottom (through the slot in the table), bring it out where I can see the bottom of the piece I am working on and feed the blade through without having to be a contortionist.  Then I just pop it back in place, again using the slot in the table, and reattach the blade into the top clamp.  So the only time I care what tool I use to change the clamp is when the clamp is in it's little holder on the table and I am completely replacing the blade.  I love this saw, largely for this reason.  I, in essence, get to have the advantage of feeding the blade from the top where I can see the hole, but it's really from the bottom because I take the whole thing off the table to feed the blade through the visible bottom holes.  Actually replacing the blade does require the key, but it's as easy to use and anything else would be.  Am I missing something?

Thank you.  The only time I have ever had white show was when I was using a reverse-tooth blade on 1/4" BB ply.  The reverse teeth were just catching the edges.  I switched to regular puzzle blades and haven't had the problem since.

I don't know if you ever got your answer.  Here is a puzzle of mine in the gallery for comparison:

I use FD Superior Puzzle blades for a tight fit on jigsaw puzzles intended for adults.  I use a #3 for ones for kids.  If thick wood, like the others, usually a 3 or 5.
