I've been using labels for awhile.  Sometimes I think it's expensive, but the result is always good.  There are a lot of patterns which can use 1/2 sheet labels too and saves money.  I order them on the internet, usually from an office supply store, because I get better prices and can get larger quantities.

I haven't actually cut a piece of wood in over a year, but am hoping to get started back.  We've finally finished the move from Columbia, SC back to Forest City, NC.  We still have boxes everywhere, but am hoping to get back to scrolling soon.   I've missed the group and am glad to be back.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Is there such a thing as a quiet small shop vac?
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:59:10 am »
I would like to add a small shop vac to my scroll saw, but the noise just drives me nuts.  They all sound quiet in a store, not so much when you are in a room without all the store noise.

It's great it the saw passes the nickel test while just running, but I want to know how smooth it is when cutting.  I'll have to test that in a little while, though I will be using my older saw and it's not as smooth running as the newer one.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using Cedar
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:55:32 am »
My only caution about using cedar is if you are using thin (up to 1/4") in fret work - it can be fairly fragile.  Watch out for grain direction and really fine lines - DAMHIKT.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: FD blades
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:46:28 am »
Those blades are very fine, yes.

For puzzles you can use different blades. For 3/4" stand up puzzles (typical play puzzle for children) I use a #5 to give it a bit of a "loose fit". The parts would hook to much to make it a fun for the children. You can use a #3, but that takes a lot of accurate sawing and will fit quite tight.
for thin puzzles (framed once) I like to use a #1. That gives me some space in between.

Did you mean you like to use a #5 for space in between?

"I usually cover mine with the trash can lid.
Rob Roy."

That is too funny (and accurate - lol)!!

I think you guys covered all the things I'd want, but just in case:
Parallel blade motion
Quiet (parallel motion should make it quiet)
Front tension release
Arm that raises and stays in place until you put in the new blade.
Magnifier light
Downdraft with the vacuum machine not noisy
Tilts the head instead of the table
Foot pedal (I don't use it but some do)
Adjustable stand
Wide table - depth doesn't really matter to me but probably at least 20"
Tool free blade changes - the Hegner needs a tool - not really a problem, but if we are wishing....
Tension control that actually holds the tension
Table to blade distance adjustable - for those rare things that are bigger, and so we would use the whole blade.
I like the slotted table on the Hegner. If I am having lots of little inside cuts on a wide project, even lifting the arm still make me stand on my head.  With the slot I can remove the piece and blade with the bottom clamp attached and then slide it back into the saw.  The top clamp attaches easily.  This means more to me every day that it seems my vision decreases.
On table work shelf to keep blades, etc. handy.  Also good for reassembling puzzles as they are cut.
Make the table and lamp movable from right to left side of the saw for us lefties.
Stops when blade breaks & arm raises automatically.
Durability - for what this thing will probably cost it had better last under heavy use.

I don't want much, do I?

Thanks for sharing those patterns.  I know they'll come in handy around Christmas for kids to paint.

You did a great job on those!  Also, thanks to Sue for the generous donation of the pattern.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!  I cut an owl several years ago that took 60 hours to cut.  Having the ability to easily get to those gazillion tiny holes made all the difference.

I love your stained glass angels - have always wanted to learn but have no space/time/money to take on a new hobby.

DW - you have an odd shaped tall display (not the items on it) on your table (3rd photo).  Where did you get it?
