Ask Steve a question. / Blog regarding air compressor
« on: September 06, 2019, 11:32:56 am »
I thought I kept the daily blog that included your discussion about using an air compressor instead of buying cans of compressed.  I am ready to purchase one but can't find the information.  Would you please send me the link for that product?
Thanks

I don't have the creative knack pattern designers have, but I would like a logo to add to shirts...  The name of my business is Gifts From Trees.  Beside it needing to have a tree, I'm lost.   I scroll ornaments, trivets, puzzles, some horse pictures, baskets, and do some carving of love spoons.  I've played with ideas and can't find a way to show any of these kinds of things without making it to cluttered.  Should I just go with a cool tree and the name of the company?   I'd still need help with that and would want it to not be too difficult to scroll as well as to have printed.  Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Brag Forum / Star Wreath = pattern by Sue Mey

This took 13 hours to cut.  The pattern was fun to cut.  I just need a wider saw table when cutting the outside edges.

I love to cut detailed fretwork.  There's virtually no continuous space on the back to document the name of the pattern designer.  Where, and how, do I give credit to the pattern designer?

I am finally getting back to scrolling and love the recent welcome signs.   What thickness of wood should I use if I do not plan on mounting them on a backer board?

Introduce Yourself. / Another returning member

I haven't actually cut a piece of wood in over a year, but am hoping to get started back.  We've finally finished the move from Columbia, SC back to Forest City, NC.  We still have boxes everywhere, but am hoping to get back to scrolling soon.   I've missed the group and am glad to be back.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Is there such a thing as a quiet small shop vac?
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:59:10 am »
I would like to add a small shop vac to my scroll saw, but the noise just drives me nuts.  They all sound quiet in a store, not so much when you are in a room without all the store noise.

General Scroll Saw Talk / An interesting experience I wanted to share
« on: August 28, 2011, 12:44:04 pm »
Our woodworking group was invited to have a presence at a new Agricultural fair, both to promote woodworking and to sell anything we had.  The weather turned out less than perfect - windy from Hurricane Irene, so we couldn't really display well.  I did sell one piece that I made a number of years ago titled Sailing Away.  The price tag had taken flight and I accidentally sold it for less than I had intended.  My problem, not the customer's.  He came back by the table several times and was looking at another piece which was priced more reasonably.  He said "oh, you must have mis-priced the piece I bought earlier.  Can I pay you more for it?"  After I picked my jaw up from the pavement I thanked him and said no.  He came back by later to be sure his credit card processed correctly because he hadn't gotten his email confirmation yet. He make sure I had his business card so that if the transaction wasn't successful I could let him know and he'd pay me with cash.  How often do you encounter that?

BTW - I used the Square credit card processor - worked great!

I'm I seeing the pattern correctly - that the whiskers and ears extend out past the backer?  Wouldn't they be really fragile?

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / RIT dyes
« on: August 06, 2011, 06:58:02 am »
I am considering dyeing some wood in projects for effect.  I know there are several wood-dyes, but has anyone used RIT dyes?  I remember seeing something about these awhile ago in one (or both) of the magazines, but those at home and I won't be for a little while.

If you have used them - were they easy to use?  Less expensive than wood-dyes? (RIT liquid dyes are running around $4 for 8 ounces, $2.50 for 1.5 oz. powder online at the moment), easy to use?  easier/harder than wood-dyes?
Thanks,
Cathy

Ask Steve a question. / Dust removal
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:52:37 am »
I'm having trouble with my internet speeds and couldn't successfully watch your dust collection video.  I got the gist, but wondered if you addressed whether or not the portable unit is as noisy as most Shop Vac's?  It seemed like the one you controlled with the remote (I don't think it was the portable one) was very noisy.  I don't want to invite hearing problems in place of dust problems. I am scrolling in the spare bedroom, frequently during my sleepless nights while my husband is sleeping.  My saw makes very little noise (Hegner).  I use the Dust Be Gone mask, but would like to add a vacuum, but noise needs to be a consideration.  It's difficult to evaluate noise levels in the store.  How noisy was it in your shop?

Introduce Yourself. / Hello from SC
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:35:15 pm »
Good morning.  Thanks for lettting me join this group.  I've scrolled for around 12 years, but still feel like a newbie.  I'm currently trying to get better at intarsia,  do a little carving - mostly Welsh Love spoons, and want to learn to make patterns.  This is the first time in my life that I didn't work - my husband is working in Columbia, SC for a couple of years so I moved down here to be with him.  After that job is over we plan on going back to western NC.  I haven't started back to scrolling yet, I'm still trying to figure out where to put things. I do hope to find some local scrollers, and local wood suppliers.  I look forward to being part of the group.
