General Scroll Saw Talk / Tilting up your scroll saw.
« on: November 13, 2010, 06:11:21 pm »
Now that I have my Dewalt 788, I thought of the times I've read of people raising the back of the saw.  I tried it with a 2 x 6 and 1 x 4 therefore raising the back 2 1/4".  I like it, but my son (who at this time has more time on the saw than I do  :) ) doesn't care for it (yet).  I think it's easier to see the pattern.

Questions:  What is a good height to raise the saw back?
How many of you raise the back?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Dewalt saw purchase - Yes or No?
« on: November 10, 2010, 04:52:06 pm »
I made a call a few minutes ago to someone who has a Dewalt scroll saw for sale.  He said it's only been used 3 times and he wants 250$ for it.  I have not seen it and it is about 75 miles from my house.  I don't know if it is with the stand and light or not.  ( I wouldn't need them as I already have a circular tube light, workbench and foot switch.

Advice:  Should I purchase or not?

BTW, if I get it, it should be in the next few hours (hopefully).

General Scroll Saw Talk / Creative Woodworks Index - Coming soon
« on: November 08, 2010, 06:16:23 pm »
According to the editor of CW&C, they are producing a comprehensive index of all their projects back to Feb 1996.
It will have search functions as well as COLOR photos!

This was announced in the new Jan 11 issue of CW&C and should be available in a few months.

This is good for those of us who have lots of back issues.

Brag Forum / Filet and Release -- A Steve Good pattern
« on: October 23, 2010, 05:01:27 pm »
When Steve posted this pattern the other day, I knew I had to make it for a friend.  Then my wife suggested a family member.  So I have two for now:

1st one:  Pattern:  Steve Good
              Wood:     Alder  1" thick
              Finish:     None yet.

2cd one:  Pattern:  Steve Good
              Wood:     Pine
              Finish:     None yet.

My only problem with the pattern is the word: Filet.  I looked it up and it is correct, but I've always used fillet (with two L's).  (By the way the spell checker here doesn't recognize it.)

So I question each viewer, should it be "filet" or "fillet"?  What do you normally use?

Brag Forum / Variations on a horse pattern
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:41:43 pm »
Here is a pattern I've adapted a couple of ways:

Pattern:  Patrick Spielman & Dirk Boelman, Decorative & Ornamental Scroll Saw Patterns, p. 49 (modified)
Wood:  1.  Camphor Tree branch slab  Dimensions:  4 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 5/16"

             2.  Cherry    Dimensions:  5" round x 1/4"

             3.  Redwood     Dimensions:  approximately 2" x 1/4"

Finish:  Gloss

The photo on the next post shows 3 more of the Camphor Tree branch slabs I cut from a tree my Dad had cut some branches off of about 13 years ago.  I recently found them stored away.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Opaque medium for lights
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:03:58 pm »
Since making a night light last year, I'm interested in making more.  I would like to know what is normally used for the opaque medium behind the scrolled pattern?  I know glass is a good medium, but more than I want to spend when doing four sided lights.

I've heard about rice paper or shoji (?) paper, but unsure of it's attributes.

What is commonly used and how is it applied?

Well for my subsequent posts I wanted to show a couple of things I've made and making.

This is a light I made for my daughter who loves horses.  It is re-purposed from an old childrens night light I bought from a garage sale.

Wood: Birch 1/4" Ply
Finish:  Minwax stain

                        Panels are 5 3/8" x 6 1/8".
                        Light is 6 3/8" x 6 3/8" x 8" tall.

Introduce Yourself. / Greetings from Naples, Florida!
« on: September 07, 2010, 05:59:24 pm »
Hello from Naples!

My name is Karl and I've been scrolling on and off for about 15 years.  I started on a Dremel 3 1/2" scroll saw back then and "progressed" to a Pro-Tech from Scotties after short time.  After that one quit, we purchased another one (I guess I'm trying to get to the ultimate yellow scroll saw) which we still have, but don't use right now.  We now use an 18" Craftsman saw with the light and pump on it as well as a magnifier light and foot switch (both a tremendous blessing).

(I say "we" because my wife uses the scroll saw too and has cut out many name plates and Bible verse references.  My son has begun using the saw as well and has cut out one dragon so far.)

My line of work is carpentry so I have lot's of wood (a lot)!  I plane most of the wood to 1/4" or 3/8" although I have a lot still in 3/4" thickness.  I recently got back into scrolling a bit more consistently and I'm trying to get a number of projects together for a horse show my daughter is going to in October. It should be inexpensive for a table.

My best, most recent purchase has been a flutter wheel from Klingspor.  I never knew sanding could be so much fun and easy!  (Thanks Steve for your video too.)

I've read a lot of the topics here so now I've decided to speak up!  I'll post as time allows and I'll post a few of the horse related items I've scrolled in the past few weeks.

Until next time;

Karl
