Brag Forum / Steve Good tea candle holders
« on: December 21, 2014, 06:12:06 pm »
Here are Steve Good's tea candle patterns I've done over the past week.

The single tea candle holder is maple and teak.
The triple tea candle holder is maple and Brazilian Cherry.

If you decide to make the tea candle holders and decide to use LED candles you will have to bore a larger hole than the 1 1/2" size Steve suggests.  After putting them together I had to ream the holes larger with a Dremel.

The triple tea candle holder has stopped holes in it using a 1 1/2" Forstner bit and the single tea candle holder has through holes with a 1/4" round piece of maple on the bottom. (per the design)  Neither one has a pass through hole to allow easier removal of the candle.

The single tea candle holder has polyurethane (one coat).  The triple tea candle holder has no finish.

Brag Forum / Jesus -The Way (Word Art)
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:04:28 am »
Just finished this yesterday.

It is a pattern from Sheila Landry Designs (by Keith).  The link for it is:  http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/product/SLDK515

This is made with teak and has a boiled linseed/mineral spirits finish on it.  The small letters were cut using FD-SR 3 and the large with a FD-SR 7.

Sheila Landry Designs has some great patterns so take a look.  Plus right now Keith is doing custom word art patterns which is great for Christmas presents. Check it out here: http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/product/SLDKC01

Sue Mey's patterns.

They can be found here:

http://www.scrollsawartist.com/i-love-horses-on-base.html
http://www.scrollsawartist.com/i-love-cats-on-base.html

The horses I made for my daughter.  The one on the left is Maple on an unknown wood base.  The one on the right is Cherry on Cherry.  She will give one away as a present - her choice.

I made the Maple on yesterday and the other a while back.  They are both sprayed with shellac.

(BTW,  in case anyone is wondering why I've cut a number of projects - it's because I've been out of work for the past 7 weeks due to an on work injury to my right arm.  I tore the bicep tendon off the bone trying to catch someone falling off a 6 foot ladder.  I should be going back to work in a week or so, but I'll still be unable to lift with my right arm any heavy tools until probably the end of the year!  I can scroll all I want though!)

This is a Sue Mey pattern she just released last week.  (She has a lot of great patterns.)

This is the link:

http://www.scrollsawartist.com/love-nativity.html?utm_source=getresponse&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=scrollsawartist&utm_content=Scrollsawartist+patterns+-+Word+nativities

I cut it out of 3/4" Cypress which had been run through a wire wheel machine at work.  (We bought the machine to distress Cypress wood and then make them into beams.)

There were some tricky spots when the tape lifted off the wood, but I held it down to finish the cuts.  Since the wood surface was uneven the blue tape I put on first didn't stick as well as it does to smoother surfaces.

The second pic shows how much distressing there was from a different angle.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Making amends and donating
« on: October 31, 2014, 10:44:03 am »
I did something today I haven?t done before ? I donated to Steve?s Scrollsaw Workshop.

Just the other day I bought an online holiday pattern pack for around 10$.  I only looked at the cover of the packet so I only saw a few patterns.  It got me to thinking last night that I can look at over hundreds (it appears) of patterns in Steve?s catalog and download them for free.  Big difference

Well I also got to thinking how stingy of me not to bless Steve back for the work he has done and for the patterns I have used.

So I fixed that today, I just donated to the Scrollsaw Workshop!

I?m not trying to guilt trip anyone to donating, but if you feel so inclined ? take a few minutes to bless Steve back for his work.

To those of you who have been doing so all along - thanks.  Thanks for keeping Steve going so we could enjoy his patterns

General Scroll Saw Talk / How do I glue up a basket?
« on: October 26, 2014, 07:43:23 pm »
I have all the pieces cut and ready for gluing.  They are for Steve's most recent post:

http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2014/10/scroll-saw-basket-pattern.html

My question is how should I glue the pieces?  I've never cut a basket before so I'm looking for advice from someone who has.  I've go some ideas, but they may not be the best way.  My biggest concern is getting all of the "pins" or "dowels" lined up so they look continuous.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a Dirk Boelman pattern from Creative Wood Works and Crafts Wood Ornament issue 2003.

It was easy to cut - great for a beginner.  The wood is 1/4" Alder and stacked 3 pieces.

Brag Forum / Kitty Love Ornaments
« on: August 27, 2014, 09:33:22 pm »
This pattern is from Steve Good posted 8/27/2014.  It's called Kitty Love.

I'm not fond of cutting real intricate things, but I do it to remind myself I can - if I try.  One kitten lost its whiskers on the sanding wheel. :( :(

This was cut with 1/4" Alder and stacked 4 pieces.

Pattern Requests. / Looking for paper scroll pattern
« on: January 05, 2014, 07:59:19 pm »
I've been looking for a fretwork pattern of a paper scroll.  The kind you might have for announcements.  I have a friend who turns one hundred and I want to make it for everyone at the party to sign.  I'll scroll in some words as well.

I know wooden teddy bear has had patterns I've seen advertised in past mag issues, but when I look for paper scroll patterns I don't get what I'm looking for.  Likewise a Google search gets me images, but not for cutting.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The Coffee Shop / 19 Things I learned
« on: March 24, 2012, 11:22:23 pm »
I don't usually post in the coffee shop, but while going through some older papers I found this and from what I can see, it hasn't been posted:

19 Things That Took Me 50 Years To Learn
          by Dave Barry

1. Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ?meetings?.

3. There is a very fine line between ?hobby? and ?mental illness.?

4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.

5. And when God, who created the entire universe with all of its glories, decides to deliver a message to humanity, He WILL NOT use, as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

6. You should not confuse your career with your life.

7. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.

8. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.

9. Nobody cares if you can?t dance well. Just get up and dance.

10. Never lick a steak knife.

11. Take out the fortune before you eat the cookie.

12. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip.

13. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight saving time.

14. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she?s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.

15. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11.

16. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.

17. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy people who are not in them.

18. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person.

19. Your friends love you anyway.
