Brag Forum / finally finished
« on: September 05, 2013, 02:41:54 pm »
this was a gift to my brother in law. i made the frame out of pine, copied from a steve ramsey youtube video(with much trial and error). the scrolling is 1/4" oak from a steve good pattern. both are just clear coated. the backer is stained glass. glass cut easily going with the grain not so against the grain(i didn't know glass had a grain). i found for me it was easier to cut the glass to the size of the frame than it was to cut the frame to the size of the glass. any help in that area would be appreciated. now lets see if this works.

General Scroll Saw Talk / broken pivot bolt
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:19:08 pm »
well, i was installing a flex tube for the dust blower on my saw and figured i would do the oiling right away. i've only used it maybe 5 hours, the manual says to oil every 20 hours. i took out the top bolt, cleaned up real good and noticed a crack in the threads, gave a little tug and #$%$$!!!  well i'm glad it broke after i got it out anyway. it's a delta model 40-540. guy at the hardware store ordered the part for me, but said it could be a week or a couple months. anybody know a better place to order from? thanks in advance.

General Scroll Saw Talk / what kind of glue?
« on: April 09, 2013, 01:46:51 pm »
i cut one of steve goods free patterns as a gift for my brother-in-law, a welcome sign with a fisherman catching a fish. i cut it from 1/4" oak and found a nice piece of stained glass i would like to mount it to. i do have some elmers wood glue and also some super glue. would something else work better? i plan on using some minwax stain (oil base) and some satin finish polyurathane on the oak.
                             thanks for your time, fred

General Scroll Saw Talk / what kind of drill press do you use?
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:29:05 pm »
i was wondering what the experts use on larger projects. i was considering a rikon 30-140. it's a bench top radial arm drill press that extends to almost 15" making it almost a 30" drill press. but the dog has to get fixed first.

Intarsia / oscillating spindle sander
« on: February 16, 2013, 04:15:33 pm »
i have wanted  to give this art form a serious attempt for quite some time, and would like to know what others use for their sanding needs. i'm kind of leaning towards a rigid that also has a belt attachment. any thoughts are appreciated.
                          thanks again, fred

General Scroll Saw Talk / drill bit size
« on: February 15, 2013, 02:10:54 pm »
being that i'm new to this art form i have a question, probably more later. i bought some olson blades from menards, smallest i could get was 2r and the smallest drill bit at fleet was 1/16" which seemed way too big for tight detail. the hardware store had these wire gauge drills, but for $3 each for something that looks like it'll break pretty easy, i figured i'de ask what size(s) the experts use. these drills have number sizes, 53, 54, 55,etc. i'm currently just using a hand drill till funds allow a drill press.

                           thanks for your time, fred

Introduce Yourself. / it's my anniversary
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:47:40 pm »
greetings everyone. i thought i would share as well as introduce myself. it's been 32 years since my lovely bride and i were wed. myself and our two older children are the artsy ones, they are brother/sister tattoo artists. my wife is the brains of this outfit, and our younger daughter and son take after her and are off to college. we're also proud of our oldest son who earned a purple heart while in afghanistan, but we are glad he's back home now, tattooing. i got interested in scrolling when a girl at work brought in some amazing pieces she had made. i started snooping around and found this place and the awsome work done by the members here. i found a delta 40-540 still new in the box for $75 on craigslist about a month ago and have been making some fine "designer firewood" ever since. i've learned alot but am looking forward to learning more. i have lots of questions which i'll post elsewhere. (sorry i'm pretty computer illiterate, type with 1 finger and don't do capitalization.)

                             thanks for having me, fred
