General Scroll Saw Talk / looking at this saw, what do you think?
« on: December 16, 2019, 11:14:28 pm »
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/592794011476758/  lost my work shop for a while but i now have it back. i have a craftsman scroll saw but could never get spiral blades to work in it. i think this saw  will solve that problem but it's a bit of money. it has some extras as you can see including some patterns. just the saw not the dust collectors. the saw is a 2004 rbi hawk g4 asking $900. what do you scroll artists think? thanks in advance, gramps

General Scroll Saw Talk / plexiglass window
« on: June 02, 2015, 02:36:10 am »
i'm replacing the old dryer vent in the basement window, of coarse the plexiglass cracked when i tried to remove the old vent, pipe and caulk, so off to the hardware store i go. i knew nothing good would happen when the young guy used a big magic marker to mark the size. but anyways it's about 1/16" too big on one side and about 3/16" on the other. i know that's not a score and snap deal (from past experience). cutting the circle for the vent shouldn't be a big deal, but the 1/16" cut could be troublesome. any suggestions on what blade to use?   thanks in advance, gramps

General Scroll Saw Talk / amber shellac ?
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:23:13 pm »
i read somewhere that amber shellac gives a nice color to baltic birch plywood. is there a spray version of this? i've never dipped anything for fear of runs. is this something that could be rubbed on like a stain? thanks for any input, gramps

General Scroll Saw Talk / what should i use for heat?
« on: October 29, 2014, 01:49:07 am »
we live in wisconsin in a drafty old farmhouse. since the kids are mostly all moved out , i made a little shop for myself in one of the upstairs bedrooms. there are only 2 heat vents for 4 bedrooms up there. the shop doesn't get one of course. i have a buddy heater that i use for ice fishing, but i figure that's just a space heater run on propane. a space heater just doesn't seem safe with sawdust floating around.        thanks in advance for any suggestions, fred

General Scroll Saw Talk / tried spiral blades and really like them but....
« on: December 26, 2013, 08:41:04 pm »
Dan26 offered  us a red green pattern so i thought i'de give it a try. using 1/4" baltic birch ply i started with fd-ur#1 blades, they cut nice and crisp but i could not control them very well. i switched to olson univ. No 0, easier to control but by the time i'm done sanding all those fuzzies that 1/4" is going to be 3/16". besides stack cutting, any suggestions? different blades? do they make reverse spiral blades? also how do you make nice clean crisp  corners with spirals? i look at Charles dearings' work and am in awe, what a master.
thanks in advance for any advice, merry christmas and happy new year,

General Scroll Saw Talk / can't get the blade in the hole
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:52:02 pm »
i'm a cold weather scroller. at the end of the last cold season i bought some fd-ur no. 1 blades from Mike. the corresponding drill bit according to the web site is a #71. is there some trick to getting the blade in the hole? do i need to grind the end of the blade to a point to get it started or do i need a bigger bit?
thanks in advance for any tips or tricks, gramps

General Scroll Saw Talk / dust mask?
« on: November 01, 2013, 01:41:11 pm »
for those of you that use dust masks what brands do you use? i don't really think those paper ones at the hardware store work all that great, and they really don't fit my grandson. steve did a review on the vog mask, but after reading other reviews people say they are difficult to breathe through.
                thanks again everyone, gramps

Brag Forum / finally finished
« on: September 05, 2013, 02:41:54 pm »
this was a gift to my brother in law. i made the frame out of pine, copied from a steve ramsey youtube video(with much trial and error). the scrolling is 1/4" oak from a steve good pattern. both are just clear coated. the backer is stained glass. glass cut easily going with the grain not so against the grain(i didn't know glass had a grain). i found for me it was easier to cut the glass to the size of the frame than it was to cut the frame to the size of the glass. any help in that area would be appreciated. now lets see if this works.

General Scroll Saw Talk / broken pivot bolt
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:19:08 pm »
well, i was installing a flex tube for the dust blower on my saw and figured i would do the oiling right away. i've only used it maybe 5 hours, the manual says to oil every 20 hours. i took out the top bolt, cleaned up real good and noticed a crack in the threads, gave a little tug and #$%$$!!!  well i'm glad it broke after i got it out anyway. it's a delta model 40-540. guy at the hardware store ordered the part for me, but said it could be a week or a couple months. anybody know a better place to order from? thanks in advance.

General Scroll Saw Talk / what kind of glue?
« on: April 09, 2013, 01:46:51 pm »
i cut one of steve goods free patterns as a gift for my brother-in-law, a welcome sign with a fisherman catching a fish. i cut it from 1/4" oak and found a nice piece of stained glass i would like to mount it to. i do have some elmers wood glue and also some super glue. would something else work better? i plan on using some minwax stain (oil base) and some satin finish polyurathane on the oak.
                             thanks for your time, fred

General Scroll Saw Talk / what kind of drill press do you use?
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:29:05 pm »
i was wondering what the experts use on larger projects. i was considering a rikon 30-140. it's a bench top radial arm drill press that extends to almost 15" making it almost a 30" drill press. but the dog has to get fixed first.
