Just say "Yes dear, great idea!"  You get a new saw and points with your roommate.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Stinking pop-ups and tool bars!

I have a grandson who spends a lot of time at my computer - some gaming but mostly looking for music and lyrics.  I get a lot of ad banners and pop ups.  I use Firefox and occasionally get it slowed or the message "Firefox not responding."  I find that if I go to Help and Restart, nearly all of my problems get eliminated.  I do not know but assume Explorer and Chrome may have similar restart type of commands that will clean out some of the ad type of garbage not caught by anti virus and other programs.

I would go to the General International web site and contact them directly to ask the question:

http://www.general.ca/contact.html

There UK distributor likely could also answer the question:

http://www.general.ca/distributors/dist_uk.html

Please share whatever you find out if you followup.

I have an EX21.  It is my understanding there are basically two companies or divisions.  General and then also General International.  Both are Canadian but if it is General International (which the EX is) it means it was outsourced overseas.  If that is correct, it would be interesting to know if all overseas outsourcing is to the same place.  For instance, does the same place manufacture and assemble a UK EX you get through Axminster as one I get from a US distributor.  My guess is they all come from the same place but it would be interesting to know.

You might add WordArt font to your arsenal if you do not have it.  It is very similar to Hobo but specifically for scroll saws and you do not need any bridges.  A useful font for many projects.  It is a free font and you can get it at:

Hobo is also a great scroll font for many projects as it has nothing going below the line.

If the blade tension lever has been used to tighten the blade you should not get that movement.  On a new saw, do what others have said - take it back and do not mess with trying to fix what should not be wrong in a new saw or risk voiding the warranty.

Just cut a piece for grandson's vocal instructor.  In addition to a singer with mic I used the words "Music - Food For The Soul".  No copyright on the words so maybe you like them or they will trip your trigger for something else.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Pre-stretching of blades?
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:35:40 am »
Just a guess but I wonder if you are really stretching the blades or taking out some slack because of blade slippage in the clamps.  I almost exclusively use FD 2/0 and # 1 spirals so my experience is limited to those blades but I really do not see any additional slack after cutting and loosening the tension.  There could be some oil or other film on the blade end which would permit the slippage.  I dunk the ends in denatured alcohol when opening a new 12 pack and wipe dry and then before using scuff the ends with 220 grit sandpaper which may account for my lack of slippage.

Also, make sure the bottom of the upper arm is parallel to the table for the length of the arm.

You might look at the following web sites for any additional ideas they may give you as you work on your shop and woodworking:

http://wheelchairwoodworker.net/

http://theartfactory.com/Product.asp?id=209

http://www.pswood.com/wheelchair-accessible-stand/

I expect with googling you can find even more places for ideas.

I agree with the above comments.  Do not use the hold down and with the right blade, speed, and feed rate you should be able to cut any wood with minimal hold down pressure from your hands.  It obviously will vary between types of wood and thickness of wood so it just takes experimenting.  I do 3/4 to 5/4 wood and find the only problem I have with "chatter" is if the wood is even just a little cupped or warped.

Steve has a skull with crossed swords

http://stevedgo.ipower.com/cat/?page_id=2483

and also a skull with cross bones and two pirate ships in a shelf pattern

http://stevedgo.ipower.com/cat/?page_id=162

I have done both with leaving the clock out of the first and leaving the shelf part out of the second.  You could always leave the ships and shelf both out of the second.

You might also want to be a member on the UK web site which is more general but does have a scroll forum.  You can probably get some answers there that are unique to UK (such as more local wood sources) although this site also has many UK members.
