Ask Steve a question. / Passive Sound Amp
« on: July 19, 2013, 07:09:21 pm »
Hi Steve,

On the passive sound amp for the the iPhone I didn't see the size of the sound hole. It looks about 2". Could you verify this for me? Thanks.

Dan

...Arrowheads. I had some small pieces of spalted maple sitting around and couldn't toss them so I made some arrowheads. It took about 30 minutes to cut, shape, and apply the finish on all 8 of these. They are 2" and 2-1/2" long. I think I'll make a bunch more from other types of wood and put them in a $1 box at the next craft show. I'll also give them away to the kids that behave while visiting the booth. Could also drill a small hole and hang it like a necklace.

One of the things I like is turning pens. I picked up a piece of coffee wood from Woodcraft because it had some nice grain. After cutting a piece for the pen and turning and finishing it, this is what was hidden inside. Maybe I need a new eyeglass prescription or to change my drinking habits, but I see aliens in there.

Pattern Requests. / Eagle Pattern

Here's an eagle pattern. It's pretty simple to cut because there are only 22 cuts to make.

I know this isn't a pattern request, but I wasn't sure where the best place to post this is.

Finally finished this one. Well, almost. I have a little more cleaning up then I'll have to make a frame. I'm happy with it.

I made the pattern from a video clip. I found a few bugs in the pattern I made so I hope to be able to share it next week if anyone is interested.

About 305 cuts. I used a #1 spiral on all cuts except the 3 large areas. I think it took about 3 or 4 hours to cut. I burned most of the fuzzies off but see I missed a few.

Comments/critiques welcome.

Here's one from Charles Dearing's book. This is cut from a slab of buckeye burl. It measures 13" x 20" x 3/8" thick. I used black matting for the background and added 1/4" ply for added support because the burl is so thin. Only took about 2-1/2 hours to drill and cut with a #1 spiral.

Thanks for looking.

This one is cut from a not-so-good piece of cherry. There was some good sized pieces of insect damage on the back but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not thrilled with it. It's about 15" x 8" and took about 3 hours. I went against my norm and used FD#3 spirals. It saved a little time cutting but I did spend a little more time cleaning the fuzzies. Finished with one coat of BLO followed by four coats of satin poly.

I ordered the pattern with some wood from Sloan's. Problem is...I was in such a hurry to cut the pattern that I didn't make a copy. Oh well, not the first dumb thing I've done.

My mom has an akita that is old but gets along pretty good. Mom keeps misplacing the dog leash so I thought if I hang this from the wall near the door, mom will have a place to keep the leash.

It's made from 5/8" cherry with plywood backer. One coat of BLO and will put a couple coats of poly on it tomorrow if the BLO is cured by then.

Brag Forum / iPod Docking

After seeing Steve Good's iPod 5 docking station I decided to make one for my iPod Touch. Great project to make from some scraps. One thing I didn't want to do is glue my USB cable to the docking station, so I thought I'd try something a little different. I put some small blocks on the bottom of the slot where the cable goes through to support the connector from the bottom. The real challenge was keeping the connector/cable in place when I removed the iPod. I drilled a small hole and used a small wood screw to clamp it. So far it seems like it will work. Over time the screw will probably come loose. If I do this again, I'll look for some hardware to glue in the hole then put the screw in.

There's no finish on it. It's made from cherry.

Thanks for looking.

Here's one I just finished. It's a Charles Dearing Pattern called On The Move. The blank is 3/4" x 8" x 15" Spalted Quilted Maple. I counted 81 cuts but may be off my one or two. It was a pleasure to cut and watch things come together.

Thanks for looking.

This is from one of Steve Good's patterns. The pattern has an art deco look to it so I added the circles in the legs. I cut this on a scroll saw but I think the whole thing could be done on a band saw also. One coat of BLO over the walnut and cherry. I think I'll put a coat of varnish after the BLO completely dries.

The fit isn't perfect but I just wanted to make something yesterday.
