General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Soft wood scrolling

Rockler sells some stuff called Wood Juice Wood Stabilizer. I'm not sure but I think it will provide more durability while cutting soft wood. I think a lacquer-based wood sealer would do the same.

I guess it depends on what you would like. I buy 3' by 4' photo matting. The stuff doesn't fade and is cheaper than plywood and I can get a variety of colors. Hobby Lobby carries this stuff.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade angle
« on: March 23, 2016, 07:18:18 pm »
This is an interesting topic. I've heard a number of reasons for the blade leaning but have never seen anything from a manufacturer which has me wondering where everyone gets their information from. I know there are some folks who have been around a while so I'm just asking if any of the manuals for your scroll saw have information about the forward to aft movement of the blade?

Another one that I heard was as the scroll saw evolved the geometry of the blade movement allowed for sawdust to be removed from the kerf and allow the blade to cut cleaner with less heat buildup.

Hi Andy. I'd like to help but I'm about 2 hours away in Cincinnati. Rick Hutchinson posted this on hi site: http://www.scrollsaws.com/SawReviews/DewltTuneUp.htm .  Maybe there's some info there that can help.  If you feel like making a road trip let me know.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: blow torches

You can use the kitchen type torch but it's not as fast as the larger torches. The kitchen torches are a bit safer though.

Keep posting. I think you graduate from newbie status at 100.

I know what you mean Brian. I am not much of a painter so I rarely add color. You did a fine job on you projects.

Good looking pieces Brian. I love the colors.  Will you be painting the Dutch couple?

Hi Mark and welcome to the site. Your Schwibbogen came out great. There are a lot of local landmarks in my town that I'd like to create in wood and a Schwibbogen is a good way to present it.

If it's the fuzzy stuff you're trying to sand off try using a torch. A quick pass or two over the back will eliminate them. Also, for reducing the fuzzy stuff I switched to FD-UR blades.

Jim, take scraps of wood and practice cutting stars or some simple shape with spirals blades. It really isn't too difficult, just takes practice.

Yup, I agree with the other comments...save the outside for last is the general rule. Have you considered using spiral blades? They almost double the size of the piece you can cut with a flat blade. It does take a little getting use to. I generally use flat blades but if I'm cutting a larger piece and if I don't have room because of the depth of my saw I will switch to a spiral blade for the last few inside cuts.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: "sand flea" or a flat sanding machine
« on: January 27, 2016, 07:02:43 pm »
I have considered the sand flea several times. I think I would be much happier with a drum sander. Of course it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you want out of it. I think a drum sander would be more versatile.
