Title: Book page holder pattern
Post by: dirtrider73068 on March 06, 2014, 03:45:32 pm
I tried my hand at making this pattern for this, you can see my project cut out in the brag forum. I got it made but am having issues with scaling it to size to print out. The measurements are 3 inches wide, 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches across the hole, the diameter of the hole is 5/8ths drilled with a forstner bit. When I got to print its either a full sheet, if I use the scale to print I can get it down to 4 1/5" wide and 1 1/5" across but need it smaller how do I go about this.

Yes those were mine on facebook, not really my idea was come off a picture I saw, no plans, no pattern the first one I had to free hand, came out all awkward but worked, second one I cut did some more pencil work made a pattern and come up with this but its too big when it goes to print and needs to be smaller, I used gimp to make it, guess need to play with it scaling to print more.

Cool idea, saw these on Facebook also. I too was confused by the 1/5 dimensions, until I read the explanation. :)

Hi, Dirtrider,
I sent you a PM to see if the scale comes out right of
your pattern. I haven't tried up-loading images on the
ScrollSaw Workshop site yet.
God Bless! Spirithorse

Yes I got it thanks, will take a look at it tonight after work, there are two ways to load pics to the site, they have to be less then 128kb. Most pics are more than that, so when I want to post a pic I use a offsite like photobucket and post the link to the picture or use the url tags and post the link in the url tags and the pic will show up that way.

Any time I have to print a pattern to an exact size, I just insert it in word and resize it there.  There's even rulers to measure that you've got exact size.  It always comes out right when I print it.

There's 1001 ways of printing, but I do all my printing and resizing from XNview, just one of the many free image viewers out there. Although it's not something others don't do, it will show you the page before printing so you have an idea what size the print out will be.
(I also set my printer to only use black ink for the pattern to save on ink - unless it's one of Ray's red outline patterns, of course. :)

I think the 5/8 hole for the thumb may be too small. I have small hands and when I made one of these, I drilled the hole 1" and it was tight.

Martin.

open the image in inkscape, trace the bit map and delete the other image, then save as an svg and then by using the X Y toolbar you can make it what ever size you want.

Hi Dave. After saving as an .svg file, and sizing the pattern can you save as a .jpg, or leave it as a .svg? Thank you, Barry.

Barry no you cant or at least I cant find a way
what you would have to do is save as a plain svg, then open that up in Gimp and then save as a JPG

Yes you can, Dave. Click File -> Export, then choose which format you want to export in.

OMG  just new that when  posted someone would correct me, Thanks Martin
of course once converted you can no longer re-size as you wish and thats why I tend to save as SVG

That's true, Dave. I export to jpg when I am sure everything is as I want it to be, including size. Occasionally I will keep an svg copy as well, but usually resizing the jpg will do.

Martin - what version of Inkscape do you use? I don't think my version (0.48) supports that jpg export (except as a png file).

I only just noticed this, Ray. My apologies to anyone who I confused, it looks like I was getting mixed up between Inkscape and Gimp. You are correct, Inkscape can only export as PNG
