My Christmas gifts
« on: December 17, 2010, 01:14:01 am »
Since GB set the precedent, I thought I'd post a pic of some of the gifts I shipped out.  They aren't made with the scrollsaw, but the scrollsaw was used in making the templates.

Thanks for the compliments!  It isn't particularly difficult, just takes some time and planning.  To make routed bowls you need a bowl bit and collet extension.  You cut out a template from 1/2" mdf and tape it with carpet tape to the blank, then you use a forstner bit in the drill press to remove most of the wood in the cavity.  Next you use the router bit to finish the work on the cavity.  Next you cut out the outside shape on the band saw, and then use a pattern bit in a router table to cut the wood flush with the outside of the template.  A roundover bit inside and out on the router table takes care of the sharp edges.   All that's left is a lot of sanding and your favorite finish.  These were mostly poplar except for the two redish ones which are cherry.  All are 2" thick.

They are beautiful!  So cute and fun. And the wood choice and finishing is just wonderful.  Thank you for sharing them with us.  I think most of us love ALL types of woodworking and it is great to see how you made these.

Merry Christmas! Sheila :)

Very interesting and unique gifts. Bill.

Beautiful finishes and wood choices.

Wish I were not so damned afraid of the 'router'.
Watched a fellow lose three fingers using one and have never liked them since!

I guess I will just have to 'suck it up!' and try using it more often.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for all the kind comments guys!  I do appreciate it.  Here is one more Christmas gift.  My Grandaughter asked me to build her a bookcase this year.  This one is birch plywood trimmed with select pine.  All done now except for a few coats of lacquer which I should be able add Sunday.  Thursday or Friday we will head to south Florida for the Holiday.  I hope she likes it.  BTW: this is just a cell phone picture.  Merry Christmas to all!
