I am wanting to make a American flag from a set of plans I got from Wood Magazine.  I have some red cedar and am wondering how good it is for scrolling and them painting.  I hate to buy wood unless I absolutely have to.

Cedar is very light weight and somewhat splintery for scrolling. And it has oil in it, so you may want to wipe  it down with alcohol or something before you paint it.
BUT.....As I always say, "I'll do anything twice" so go for it!

Thanks, you talked me out of it.  This cedar is totally dry, it is 1" thick, and was siding off a house.  Very dry and soft.  I'll look for something else.

For my part use often tilia Americana.

Don't throw away the cedar.  I have used it for many projects without the oil problem.  I fact, I have never seen any oil on any of the western red cedar boards I have used and they were intended to be fences.  The rose I made for My Dear bride on a previous post was made from western red cedar. http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=17003.0
I have made a flag from the  pattern in Wood Magazine out of inch cedar, then cut each part into and ended up with two flags.

Nope I won't toss the cedar, I don't toss wood until it is so small I can't hang on to it anymore!   

I'm now thinking I will try baltic birch.  I have some good pieces of that.  That is the flag I am going to try to make.  I had to reduce the size by 10%.  It was just too large to fit where I want it.

I did this flag also. I had a ball with all the stars......

I had fun with the stars too.  I got a little sneaky and drilled a hole in each star just enough to touch the arms of the stars. Went into the holes and chewed out the arms and  "A Star is Born".  In fact, 50 of them were.

Got my first flag done.  Now I have to make another for the other side of the cart.  Guess my wife would like one for the front door also.  I should know how to make them by the time I am done!

How did you paint the inside of the stars?  The way I did was to spray the white into the stars, when the paint was dry, filled the holes with play dough, then sprayed the blue field.  When all was dry pushed the play dough out and it was finished.

Chuck, I did it exactly like the instructions,,, instructed.  Sprayed with flat white, went over it with a small foam roller with the blue.

That sounds like it might be easier.  ll I have is the pattern, lost the instruction a long time ago.

Very, very nice!
Is the left portion thicker wood, shimmed up, or is it just an optical illusion that
it looks higher than the right portion?
