General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using Sprial Blades.... :+}
« on: November 02, 2012, 12:55:05 am »
It seems with spirals and flat blades it all depends on which you start with.   That would suggest that it is a practice issue.  But personally I have tried spirals in the past and I just can't get comfortable with them.

Spirals are more aggressive.  So it sort of defeats the purpose for using them which is tight and quick turns.  I tend to break a lot more wood even when I am stack cutting.

The other problem, for me, is I HATE fuzzys.  I seem to get a lot more when I use spirals.  That said, I have seen some amazing portraits cut with spirals, so they have their place for scrollers.  I scroll to relax and I can't relax much (yet?) using spirals.

Danny, I feel your pain. :)

Pattern Requests. / Re: Pattern for the Thumb Screws on the DeWalt 788

Be careful ToverT, these can put a lot of torque on your blade holders.  I stripped my top one out after a short time.  I ordered two replacements and have gone back to the original thumb screws.  You might be alright, just my experience.  Good luck.

I go wood, pattern, clear packing tape.  I try to not tape the back or bottom only the sides.  It comes off pretty easy with the pattern and I clean everything up with min. spirits.

What a unique and appropriate gift for your cousin and his new bride.  They have their priorities straight, as you said, and are off to a good start.  Well done!

Be sure to have plenty of ventilation and wear a mask, particularly with lacquer.  It can be dangerous to breath.

I was thinking, while reading your post, my wife would kill me if I sprayed in the house.  We don't have the winters in VA that you experience in MN.  Shellac and adhesives OK, but if at all possible get outside with lacquer.

Good luck Pete.

Thanks to you both.  I am thinking something along the traditional lines.  I know I'm not being very clear.  I will keep looking.  Maybe it will come to me.  Thanks.

I use 3M Super 77 (spray adhesive) a lot and DAP makes some that I bought at Woodcraft. Both work fine.

Thanks for the tip, Rog.  I picked up a can of spray paint the other day, instead of the spray lacquer, and used it by mistake.  Not good.    :o

Pattern Requests. / Border patterns...

I am making a sign using a quote a friend of my always says.  I used Steve's Stencil Printer and came up with a nice pattern of the words.  What I would like to do and what I need help on is some decorations to go around part of the border.  Cutting out just the words makes for a very plain project.

I hope I am being clear on what I am asking.  Many homey sayings you see framed and hanging on the wall have interesting borders.  I am at a loss and hope someone can help.  Thanks.

Everybody is giving you good advice John.  The more you scroll the better you will get and the more enjoyable it becomes.  Slow your speed at first and let the saw do the cutting.  When your scrolling becomes tedious or you're getting tired, stop, take a break and do something else for a while.  Good luck.
