Seeing as i was not the only one confused I "Googled" goggle hangouts it it looks like  some type of social media ? site see link below. Woodworking forums is as social as i get but kind of lost in new technology as i was born before before we hi tech electronics.
On that note a while back I need a 9 volt battery went to the local drug store and asked for a transistor battery (old people will understand) the clerk in his late 20"s  was confused  :) I did educate him before  I left with my battery.

It should not matter for a standard scroll saw pattern unless this is for some special use that would require the extra thickness.

herrwood,

When you are talking about 1" thick boards being 3/4", you are thinking of 4s boards. That is to say that they are already finished (jointed and planed to a nice smooth surface) on all four sides like you buy at Lowe's or Home Depot or a lumber yard.
When you talk about 4/4 boards (USUALLY) you are talking about rough cut wood which will vary from 1-1/16" to 15/16" thick so that a person can finish them himself with a planer and jointer. A 5/4 board would be around 1-1/4" thick and be rough cut and need to be finished.
As far as buying a 4s board of  1" thick (which would be a 5/4 when rough cut) I don't think you can find one any where unless you pay a mill operator to finish one out for you.
I know this seems confusing and unfair (If I pay for a 1 x 6 board, darn it I want it to measure 1" thick and 6" wide!) But, the truth of the matter is that your 1x6 will actually measure 3/4" x 5-3/4" (if not 5-1/2") That is just way it is!?
I live in a fairly old house (built in 1953) The studs in the walls measure 2" x 4". I added a bedroom to the house in 1977, the studs in those walls 1-3/4" x 3-3/4" and today if you buy wall studs, they will measure 1-1/2" x 3-1/2"! It just don't seem right does it?  >:(

I agree wit DW on this This type of stuff has been going on forever back in the early computer days I forget but somewhere in the mid 90's email became a popular way to communicate and there always was some predator out there but most people knew to be aware and not trust anything that you could not identify. Rules are the same today except the crooks are smarter best way to treat emails and other messages is like you do at home if someone knocks on your door that you do not know you do not invite them in same with a email if you do not know who it is from or it does not look right or makes sense delete it !

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/27/here-s-how-iran-resets-your-gmail-password.html

There is a real simple solution besides not using Gmai.  Do NOT link your smart phone to your google account.  This is the window that they are using to get at you.  Be smart and realize that a company will not contact you by email do to something unless you authorize it first.  Do not open attachments, etc from people, companies that you did not specifically ask for the attachment from.  Social Engineering is what phishing ( fishing ) is called.  They attempt to trick you into doing their work for them however if you are smart and aware of what is going on you can defend successfully.

LIke DW said the rod should be easy to bend if no vice then you could use the end of a table (do not let wife see this) or a stair step most anything that has a 90 degree. If is too hard to bend hit it with a hammer on the top end and it should conform to the angle you are bending it on.

I like this pattern/idea Steve made.
This could be a nice gift or selling item....
Can imagine maybe Steve will making different shapes like Santa, reindeer for Christmas, or a turkey for Thanksgiving, etc.... (hint ;))
My thought is, maybe use Corian or these cheap plastic/poly cutting boards instead of wood. (no problem with steam/moisture)
The cutting boards are for sale in different colors for $ 2,-/3,-  at the cheap discount shops.  8)
just an idea....

I do like the plastic idea and as I never tried to cut plastic it would be a simple pattern to try it with.

I do not have the book recommended but I do have a few other books by the same author Anders S. Lunde and he does explain the process very clearly. You could make a whirligig  just from his books with out any plans.
