One of Steve's Vases cut from 1 3/4 oak, and 3/8 mystery pallet wood.

I have the Shop Fox version of the Grizzley jointer, which has done a good job for me.

I use a plywood insert with a 2 x 3 stop, to plane down to 1/16". It needs to be long enough to cover both the infeed and outfeed tables. I finished it with polyurethane and a good coat of paste wax.

I agree with you about the bandsaw. When I saw the pattern the scrollsaw was the only safe way to cut the pattern.

Found the plan at Wood Magazine that I talked about yesterday. Here is the link if any one is interested.
 http://www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-plans/home/somethings-fishy-key-ring/

I had to blow the pattern up 132% to be the correct size.

I too have made quite a few of these fish. I got the pattern from Wood Magazine, there sight was down for maintenance when I tried to find a link for the pattern. The pattern is dated 2007.

Another thing that you could do is put a piece of 1/4" plywood under the good wood thus creating a zero clearance insert to combat the tear out.

The space for my shop is 10 x 20, which is the 3rd bay of a three car garage. It is uninsulated, but here in SW Washington I can work out there year round most days. I have a full assortment of hand and power tools.  My table saw, planer, band saw, drill press, scroll saw, and jointer are all on mobile bases.

I built my stand so that I could sit at it to work. Then to help deaden any vibration I designed the base of the stand to hold 25 pounds of sand.
