I just ordered a Square reader for my upcoming June 1 show. I have an early Motorola Droid on Verizon with unlimited data. I will report on its functionality after the show.

I love mine, I hope it works as well for you!

I had to order a cable for it to work in my Iphone 4S with the Otterbox because it would not seat all the way down. The cables at Radio Shack will not work. I found these on the internet at Cell Pay. Also, if you are in a metal building, you will have trouble connecting, unless a Wi-Fi is available nearby. Good luck with the show and the Square. I also use the Intuit Go Pay system.

I loved having mine at my last show. I think it helps alot for larger purchases, I know I rarely have cash on hand and have purchased from others with square.

I teach concealed carry gun classes as a sideline and use my square card to accept payments. It has worked fine on my iphone 4s.

The low down -
for full time Artist their a P.I.T.A
Yes very low ( or no cost ) but to use it many times a day
they are a pain . At a few locations my neighbors used them -when their is no signal
they will not store data for a latter transmission ( like my nurit does -The nurit can store and batch at the end of the day - threw a phone line or another location where their a signal )
which means -no credit card sales , where theirs no signal- period .
My nurit is costly- yes , but as a full time Artist its a business exspense thats justified.
Ive also heard ( thou not experienced myself ) they are not very durable .
You can also rack up time on your phone ( unless your plan is unlimited )
Hopefully things have changed since last winter - for the ocassional Crafter the
phone credit card reader is OK -but if you make your living with one -
Id pass .

I have the big 3 (Paypal,Square and Intuit) and can not get 1 of the readers to work very well.
I usually have to hand enter the card info.
All 3 have told me its because there is not a strong enough signal. BUT both of my signal indicators show full strength.

I have a card reader I purchased through my bank. What I like about it is:
Wireless, immediately prints a receipt for the customer and I have a signed copy. Customers name is on the receipt. It settles at the end of the day and money is in my account in two days. Less than 2% fee and is cheaper per month than a smart phone would be. No signal problems. I also use it for phone orders on long distance sales. I just saw ,today, that Sam's Club now offers a similar device.

Where do you teach? I am an instructor as well.

I have one as well and purchase a hot box as well. No wifi no problem as long as there is cell service the box will transmitt

In about a year, most US credit cards will be switching from magnetic stripe to smartchip technology. Customers will insert their cards into a reader that talks to a chip embedded in the card. This will hopefully put an end to skimming and stolen card numbers.
Along with that switch will come a liability change. If you continue to accept magnetic stripe credit cards and it turns out to be stolen, you will be liable for the funds, not the bank.
My point is: do not spend much money on a mag stripe reader as they won't be around long.
