General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spiral Blades
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:00:13 pm »
I'm not a big fan of spiral blades for most cutting. I do use them sometimes when I want the particular effect that spirals give. Usually for veining. In that case I look at it as a different kind of brush like with painting. They do give a certain kind of line.

Other than that, I don't like them. They cut incredibly slow compared to a good sharp standard blade, you cant get anywhere near sharp corners, and you can't get the small fine cuts like you can with a small blade like a #1 or the Superior puzzle blades that Mike sells.

Plus, I prefer to turn my work anyway. Fretwork with lots of small lines, it's tough to precisely follow a line behind the blade or to the side of the blade like you can do with spirals.

Did I mention how slow they cut? LOL

I like that a lot! I always love to see mixed media, in this case metal and wood. Very nice.

I necked down the end of the tube I am using from the pump and it helped quite a bit. Now I just have to learn to cut a straight line.

Straight lines are over rated  ;D That's what table saws are for!

Beautiful designs as your designs always are.

In addition to great designs Charles, you give quick service too. I've bought a couple over the years and one just last week that I'm going to start cutting shortly.

New York here. Upstate though at the base of the Catskills, not the city.

I just had something similar. Someone in North Carolina was using my checking Visa debit card number at a couple drugstores and grocery stores. I live in upstate NY! The bank did cancel the card and give me a new one, but I have to wait 7-10 days to have the $150 worth of charges credited back to my account.

Very nice! I've done fish before, but that's the first one I've seen like that with a whole bunch.

I sold a few of these clocks. Not at shows, but for people that asked me to make them for gifts.
I've attached the patterns for anyone to use if you like.

Here's a sample photo. You can substitute just about anything you like in the center as long as it fits I don't have a picture of the dove or cross, but I have them in patterns.

Thanks DW!
Most of the gears are Baltic Birch plywood for stability, but a couple of the small pinions are padauk. The rest of the frame and base are walnut except for a thin top layer on the base that was made from Koa. It covers the magnetic coil and has to be thin. The hands are rosewood.

It's been keeping decent time so far, but I need to tweak the adjustments. It's been running a little fast by about two minutes per hour. The speed can be adjusted by moving the weighted bob and/or adding or removing lead shot.

I don't really expect it to be perfectly reliable over the long hall though. Being made of wood it's going to be susceptible to temperature and humidity I would think.
