Brag Forum / Making of a Bowl Blank or an End Grain Cutting Board
« on: March 24, 2011, 07:47:43 pm »
I first selected contrasting woods. Hard Maple, Purple Heart and Brazilian Cherry.

Step 1

I cut them to different widths, aranged them then glued them together.

Step 2

With the first raft glued together I marked off strips that were 3/4 of an inch wide.

Step 3

Step 4

Steps 3 and 4 I arranged the strips i just cut so that end grain was up and checked fit

Step 5

I glued them all together making sure that the piece looked visually straight

Step 6

I used my flat 18 in drum sander ( similar to a sand flee ) to smooth and flatten both sides.

Closeup Detail

At this point I have either a bowl blank or an end grain cutting board of high quality.  I have not decided yet which :)

Brag Forum / Bamboo Bowl
« on: March 19, 2011, 05:57:53 pm »
Thanks goes to Katie ( MrsN ) for the idea.  I had tried some time back to make a bowl with bamboo but the cutting board I had gotten was one of the 19 - 20 mm thick ones and it when cut had huge voids... the board only had 2 good layers the top and the bottom. Anyway I digress.  I decided to try again but this time I got some 1cm or .4 in thick  8x10 bamboo cutting boards from the local Wally world and made this.  Bamboo cuts real easily and finishes great.  Made the pattern from the scrollmania website.  The bowl was sealed with Tung Oil then top coated with satin lacquer.

Brag Forum / New Bowl
« on: March 03, 2011, 06:56:15 pm »
Here is my new bowl with a few work in progress pictures and the finished bowl.

As you can see in the picture above I used 3/4 in Poplar Plywood and 3/16 Clear Pine and cut strips that were 7/8 wide and 9 in. long.  I decided that the blank was incomplete so I marked halfway on each side and connected the marks.  I cut the corners off and added a 1/4 inch thick padauk strip on each side.  I decided on a simple round bowl cut at 29 degrees left side down.

I have reposted the pictures using an alternative hosting for the images as aparently ImageShack still is infected.  Sorry about that
