short rant 2 - more on designer firewood
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:33:02 am »
Boy!  If you think you can produce some designer firewood on the scrollsaw, let me tell you it is nothing compared to working on box building with shaped dovetail or box joint joinery on a router table.  I now have turned some prime cherry and maple into good material for the scrollsaw because of re-sawing, planing it down to 3/8 of an inch and miss cutting box box joints and shaped dovetails.  It is all still usable for scrolling, but can't be cut again to fulfill the original purpose.  Talk about simple things making you feel stupid!

It happens to all of us, Bill. It is sad when it does, but usually we learn something from it.  Sorry it happened to you!

most importantly the woods not wasted as it is still ok for the scroll saw, it would have been worse if it was totally unusable.

Hi Bill,I know the feeling well. After 50 years in the trade I STILL do it and it's a pain the butt (putting it politely). Remember the 6 P's.

Proper planning may prevent P*** poor performance, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee proper execution.  Especially  when your last name is Murphy.  In my case Murphy's law applies double.

Ok, tonight it all turned around.  I pulled a piece of rough lumber out thinking it was cherry and when I jointed a face it was mahogany.  Jointed it, planed it, sawed the edge parallel, re-sawed it on the bandsaw into 1/4 " and 1/2 ", cut the parts and ran them through the box joint jig and every operation went smooth as could be.  Some nights you're the windshield and some nights you're the bug!  It's all in clamps now and the box top is also being glued up.

I had a "Murphy" day yesterday, Bill!  Fortunately I wasn't doing any woodworking!  Got so disgusted I just plopped my butt in my recliner and got caught up on my reading (and took a little nap ;)).  Glad the last try worked out for ya!  Of course you realise you now have to show us pictures of the project when it's done, right?

Routers are great aren't they? I love mine too. Probably the MVP int he wood shop.
A lot of possibilities, and when it turns out right a real upgrade to every woodwork.
But also a big chance for mistakes.
