Hello,

This is an intarsia flower I did out of pine. I stained it diffrent shades to make it look like diffrent woods. I got this pattern from a book written by Garnett Hall.

 Thanks for looking

That's a goodie.  It is the one that I use for practice when I haven"t done intarsia for a while and need to warm up the muscle memory.  :):)

Nice.

Looking for beginner patterns and that looks like a winner. What's the name of the book?

Nice work.

I was thinking of trying thinned watercolor paint for a stain. Any experience with that? What did you use for color stain?

That Flower turned out very nice. It's a great pattern to practice with. You can find quite a few stained glass patters that are simple and easy to convert to Intarsias.

Good Job Dean, you would never know the wood was pine.

thanks for the compliments

Scrolldown, the book is called "the art of intarsia" Garnett Hall

EIEIO, yes, I have done acylic wash for color. I did a tulip for a friend. Turned out great. If you click on the link under my name, there is a picture of it somewhere on my blog page

ChuckD, it is a basic intarsia and a great warm up like you mentioned. In fact if you are just starting out doing intarsia, I think anything plant life is the easiest patterns to do. You can visualize the leafs and flowers better. At least thats what I found.

Nice work! I was wanting to give a try at intarsia and this looks nice. For me it would be easier to stain wood than buy exotic woods.

country scroller, there is nothing wrong with staining. In fact, its the best way to start out. Exotic wood is expensive, where as pine is cheap. Practice first and as you get better, move up to domestics like, oak, walnut and popular. little more expensive than pine, but still affordable. Thats just my view of it.

Also, I have used acrylic paints and kinda wipe and wash so the grain still shows through.

Here is my last version of the simple flower.  It was all natural wood.  Western red cedar and Poplar.
