3M 77, Duro?
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:23:10 pm »
I've used Duro for attaching patterns since I started scrolling, but now can't find it at Lowe's or Home Depot.  I know a number of you use 3M #77, but what I'm finding is Super 77 and it doesn't show it to be repositional.  Is this the same stuff you use?  Or what else would you recommend?  Thanks..

Our local True Value hardware carries "3M General Purpose 45" says it's photo safe. It was the only kind they had and I've been using it. You better have your pattern ligned up right before it touches because it grabs right on. If you try to shift it, it pulls away from the blue tape and makes a mess. Otherwise works fine.

3M 77 ... once it touches it adheres so make some marks on the edge of the pattern and on your wood so you can line things up and get it down right the first time.

I've said before that spray was initially used to mount the headliners in autos during production so it has to grip tight and long.

IF you apply it directly to the wood it will stay and it easily comes off with a spray of Mineral Spirits.

I'm using some cheap Elmers spray adhesive. It works great. I think it was $4 a can.

I still use spray, but this is one of the reasons I decided to forget the few extra cents and go to printing on psa backed paper.

I was using the 3M product until I ran out.

I was at Lowes and they didn't have it so I bought a Loctite product.  It was meant for paper and such as it was repositionable.  Unfortunately it was too weak of a bond unless I sprayed both surfaces.  Back to Lowes it went.

So to Home Depot after work to get the 3M product - it works great with just a little bit of spray!

I would highly recommend the 3M General Purpose 45.

Karl I probably use more than I need to, but I have yet to have it lift up when cutting.
Works for me!
I still use the blue tape over the wood then glue pattern to that. No heat gun or mineral spirits or other fancy tricks to get rid of adhesive, it all peels right off together. No problems with patchy stain either.

Try the Krylon spray glue.  I get get at Michaels and use the 40% off coupon from the Sunday paper and it only cost $4.20 including tax. Works just the same as 3M

I picked up a can of the Loctite 'permanent' spray at my local Ace Hdwe store...used it twice and it came out of the spray in 'globs' instead of a fine spray...took it back to the store and talked to the owner and told him to give it back to the Loctite rep. He graciously gave me a full refund and appreciated my comments.
A week later I received a letter from the Rep with a $10 gift card to the Ace store. His letter stated that he sent the can back to the factory with my comments and that they had had several complaints from the stores in this area and they felt it was a bad batch of 'nozzles'.
Yesterday I received two fresh cans and a letter asking me to try them and included was a form to return with my evaluation of the replacements.
Pretty good response to a simple complaint!
Will try the new cans this afternoon on some projects and 'file my report'.

I just bought a can of 3M spray last week at HD. Walmarts and Michaels carries it, I been using it for quite a few years and like it.  Edward

Edward, which 3M spray do you use that you like?  45, Super 77 or what?

GB, I picked up a can of the Locktite repositional at Lowes yesterday before I saw your response.  I'll probably take that back now.  What happened to good 'ol Duro?  Can't find that at Ace either.
