The Coffee Shop / Where are you?
« on: August 09, 2014, 10:16:40 am »
I have been thinking that making our member's location public would be a good idea.  Quite often knowing the general area would help - electrical questions is one area that comes to mind.

I believe that your location is an optional field in the public profile so I'd like to suggest that each member make his/her approximate location available to the rest of us.  For example. Chicago, North Dakota, Saskatchewan, New Zealand, Scotland would be sufficient.

Let's start including the location in our profile.  It could also be added to the signature.

Edit - I added my location to my signature (below)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Magnifying LED light
« on: July 30, 2014, 12:40:46 pm »
Just FYI, Busy Bee has this http://www.busybeetools.com/products/MAGNIFYING-LAMP-LED-FLOOR-STANDING-SILVR.html?utm_source=Busy+Bee+e-Newsletter&utm_campaign=4c70c128fe-Special_Buy_B30657_25_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_80afd6c9c6-4c70c128fe-8404353 floor lamp.  I have what appears to be the same light (other than that it is a table mount) and it is very good for scroll saw work.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade movement question
« on: July 21, 2014, 08:57:51 am »
With the discussion going on in golfman's post http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=17127.0 about back and forth movement, I thought I'd ask my own question.

Some saws have no back and forth movement of the blade.  If there is no (zero) back and forth movement, how does the sawdust get cleared out of the cut, especially when cutting pieces that are thicker than the length of the stroke?

Not trying to debate that various saws, just wondering?

The Coffee Shop / Be careful when you dial
« on: July 05, 2014, 03:54:28 pm »

'Hello?'
'Hi, honey. This is Daddy. Is Mommy near the phone?'
'No, Daddy. She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Paul.'
After a brief pause, Daddy says, 'But honey, you haven't got an Uncle Paul.'
'Oh, yes I do, and he's upstairs in the room with Mommy, right now.'

Brief Pause ...
'Uh, okay then, this is what I want you to do. Put the phone down on the
table, run upstairs, knock on the bedroom door and shout to Mommy that
Daddy's car just pulled into the driveway.'
'Okay, Daddy, just a minute.' A few minutes later, the little girl comes
back to the phone. 'I did it, Daddy.'

'And what happened, honey?'
'Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran
around screaming. Then, she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the
dresser and now she isn't moving at all!'

'Oh, my God!!! What about your Uncle Paul?'

'He jumped out of the bed with no clothes on, too. He was all scared and he
jumped out of the back window and Into the swimming pool. But I guess he
didn't know that you took out the water last week to clean it. He hit the
bottom of the pool and I think he's dead.'

Long Pause ...

Longer Pause ...

Even Longer Pause ...

Then Daddy says, 'Swimming pool? ............ Is this 486-5731?'

'No, it isn't .. I think you have the wrong number.'

Computer questions / Is it me or this site?
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:36:57 pm »
Over the past week or so, sometimes when I enter this site, it waits and waits and then it times out.  If it doesn't time out, it only loads the text, not the background colours.  If it's only the text, sometimes I am logged in, other times only as a guest.  When I exit and then go back to this site, it works normally.

I'm set to log on automatically.

Before supper today, it was very slow, had to try reloading a few times and then I got only text.  I could look at the threads but they were text only.

Hope I have explained the events clearly enough that someone can respond with suggestions.

Is anyone else having this problem?  Are there problems with the site?

Thanks,
Jim

The Coffee Shop / Women and lying
« on: February 21, 2014, 03:05:34 pm »
My wife told me this story.

One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river, her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "My dear child, why are you crying?"

The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family.

The Lord dipped His hand into the water and pulled up a golden thimble set with pearls. "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

The seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out a silver thimble ringed with sapphires "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

Again, the seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord reached down again and came up with a leather thimble. "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

The seamstress replied, "Yes."

The Lord was pleased with the woman's honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.

Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water. When she cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked her, "Why

are you crying?"

"Oh Lord, my husband has fallen into the river!"

The Lord went down into the water and came up with George Clooney.

"Is this your husband?" the Lord asked.

"Yes," cried the seamstress.

The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"

The seamstress replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said 'no' to George Clooney, you would have come up with Brad Pitt. Then if I said 'no' to him, you would have come up with my husband. Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three.

"Lord, I'm not in the best of health and would not be able to take care of all three husbands, so THAT'S why I said 'yes' to George Clooney."

And so the Lord let her keep him.

The moral of this story is: Whenever a woman lies, it's for a good and honorable reason, and in the best interest of others.

That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

The Coffee Shop / Way off topic
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:34:00 am »
I know this is far from scroll sawing or even woodworking but here goes.  I've had some minor sewer blockages and have been able to clean them out myself.  I'd like to run a camera through the line to see what is happening but this means $$$.

A friend has ordered from this site http://dx.com/ and has been very satisfied with the orders.  I found this http://dx.com/p/ip67-waterproof-usb-2-0-cmos-6-led-snake-camera-endoscope-w-reflective-lens-black-10m-174942 and thought it might be cheaper in the long run - I could check any time I want.

Has anyone any experience with this sort of device - how well it illuminates, how the long cable actually works (USB max length is about 5 meters), etc., etc.

Thanks for any comments.

Computer questions / Connection reset???
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:36:57 pm »
While I am going from page to page on this forum, I regularly get a "blank" screen with a message saying the connection was reset.  Once in a long while I get the same thing with other sites, on this site it seems to happen 5 to 15 times a day.

Clicking the "reset" (or is it Retry?) on the blank page usually gets me to the page I was going to but sometimes I have to click Reset/Retry two or three times.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro with 16G RAM on an i3770 CPU (a new, well equipped system) and the latest Firefox.  Windows is up to date.

Is anyone else having this problem?  On the assumption the problem is on my end, I have looked through the internet but haven't found much help.

Has anyone here had the same problem and did you find a solution?

Thanks for any help.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Cutting plastic
« on: January 20, 2014, 08:51:43 am »
Tried cutting plastic (cutting board type - polyethylene) yesterday - quite a hassle!!  I tried the largest FD is had, a #5, at low speed but the solidified behind the blade.  I found an old pinned blade, without the pins, and it worked quite well, as long as I moved the cut along quickly.  As soon as I slowed down, the kerf closed in.

The blade is used has about 18 teeth per inch but is quite thick and 1/8" wide.  The size doesn't help much at making sharp turns but I think the extra width made a wider kerf that didn't close in.  I know Mike recommends Polar blades for plastic but I wanted to cut now.  :)

What has your experience been with cutting plastic?  Any suggestions would be appreciated - blade type, speed, etc.

Thanks and have a good day,
Jim

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / DW788 tear-down
« on: May 25, 2013, 09:48:01 am »
In case anyone missed it, Steve's May 24 post had a link to a video on taking a DW788 apart.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7EWpq3aQeU&feature=youtu.be  It doesn't show putting it back together so pay attention if you take it apart.    ;D ;D

The Delta 40-690 is identical to the 788 and I believe the 40-695 is essentially identical to the 788 so there is good info for us Delta owners as well.  There was a good segment on greasing the many (I think 30 was mentioned) needle bearings in the saw.

It's about an hour but is worth watching.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Delta 40-690 bottom rocker replacement
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:01:44 pm »
Well, I have the new part and am trying to remove the old one.  I have the two bolts removed (where the two holes are in the picture) but each bolt goes through a bushing that is preventing the upper and middle "arms" from dropping out.

The new part (second pic) doesn't seem to have a recess for a bushing in the "ears" so I assume the arms should pull out of the old rocker?  Am I correct?

Any suggestions on how to remove the arms from the old piece?

Thanks,
Jim
PS, the 40-690 is a clone of the DW788

General Scroll Saw Talk / Delta tools - parts story
« on: April 17, 2013, 05:03:59 pm »
On Jan 24 I ordered a part for my Delta 40-690 from the Dewalt service centre in Montreal, Quebec.  The part finally arrived last Friday, about 2-1/2 months after I ordered.  When I picked up the part, the Dewalt guy told me that starting May 1 (a couple of weeks away), Delta would have their own service centre, but he didn't know where it would be or the phone number.

All this is news to me.  Last spring a Delta rep told me that Dewalt would service Delta for a couple of years.  I hope it means they are ahead of schedule.

Has anyone else heard this news.  I'm especially interested in reports from Canada, and the location of a service centre near me..

Have a good one,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Bigfoot dust collector
« on: April 16, 2013, 03:07:35 pm »
The people at Bigfoot have an under the table dust collector that looks quite unique.  http://www.bigfootproducts.ca/DCS.html  The connection for the vacuum hose is 1", as I recall, but it looks like the fitting is a regular plastic fitting so you could buy an adapter to fit a larger vacuum hose.  I also suspect you could drill out the hole in the dust collector for a larger fitting.

Interesting and innovative idea.
