He does have a newer version out and has been offering it on sale recently.  I find the owner a very cooperative guy.  If you have an older version, he will sell you the new one for half price.

You might consider this cheating, but:

Make the wooden coasters on your Scrollsaw, then take them to someone that does laser engraving to add the scripture.  If you have a Woodcraft in your area, many have the ability.

It depends on both the project and the finish.  Most people planning on using lacquer or shellac will sand to 150 grit.  Oils etc. are often sanded to 220 or even higher.

Perhaps you could re-cut the burned area taking off only a slight amount while running the blade at a lower speed?
