Thanks newfie!

I look at it this way, too - you've already paid the postage.  I bet it doesn't cost anymore to mail 3-4 than it does to send 1.

Sounds like fun!

The Coffee Shop / 2013 Christmas Ornament questions
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:02:53 pm »
This is my first time to participate in the exchange.  From what I've read on the forum, we give you our name and address and you send my name to someone and I get their name.  Then we each make at least one ornament to send to each other.  The one ornament is a minimum, but people commonly send 2, 3 or more.  Correct???

Thanks,
Ken

Get togethers, shows and swap meets / Re: Scrolling at the Market?

You're probably not going to like this part any better than I did...........but, I could not find plastic templates of a font I wanted to use except for a couple that were VERY expensive.  SO....I cut my own.  I printed the alphabet in all caps at the size I wanted, then attached that to formica and cut my own templates.  I have used formica for a lot of templates on things I knew I would be cutting over and over.  It is very thin and very durable.

One thing about cutting a curvy type letter, is that unless you have 2 of them side by side, you can get away with not being exact on your cutting and no one notices - they still look good.  If you use a font that has a lot of straight sides, it forces you to make a lot of straight cuts and REALLY slows you down.  So this font gives you a lot of freedom and speed.

I did this because I didn't want to have to take a computer and printer out in the dusty conditions and try to keep track of adhesive spray and paper in the wind as well as needing 2 more electric outlets.  This greatly simplified the process.  All I had to take was 2-3 pencils, templates and pre-cut blanks.  It went very well.

I set my saw up at an outdoor arts festival and cut out names for $5/ea.as fast as I could cut them all day.  I had 3/4" pine blanks cut and sanded, ready to cut ahead of time.  It drew a lot of lookers and I could visit and answer questions while I was cutting.  I had people at my booth all day.

I have looked all over Steve's pattern site and can't find this sewing machine pattern.  Can anyone post a link to it?

Thanks,

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Baltic Birch Plywood
« on: August 06, 2013, 08:36:11 am »
My local lumber yard sells BB ply and they can order any thickness I need.  The 5'x5' sheets of 1/4" BB is $25 which makes it $1/sq. ft.  Cheaper than my other option which is Woodcraft.  That's also cheaper than the craft stores.  They can get 3/8" and 1/2" which are a little more (up to about $29-$30 dollars) and they can also get 1/8".

They keep some in stock for drawer sides and bottoms.

What material/board do you cut most of your work from?  Very nice cuttings.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Arts and Craft Show
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:30:56 pm »
I am working toward an arts and craft show June 1st and am planning on setting up my saw and cutting names during the show - partly to raise interest in my booth and partly to hopefully sell several.  Those of you who do or have done this, what is the easiest/best way to do this?  Do you cut all your blanks ahead of time and how do you set up your lettering for each name request?  What shape or form works best - 3/4" pine without a base - just the name? - script type lettering or block? - etc.?

Thanks for your answers in advance!

General Scroll Saw Talk / 5 x 5 1/4" birch plywood????
« on: December 30, 2012, 11:43:48 pm »
Does anyone have any suggestions about full sheets of 1/4" birch plywood?  Will it stay straight and true in a full sheet?  Would I be better off cutting it into smaller pieces right off the top to keep it flat and free from bowing?

Anybody want to share some experiences?

Thanks,
Ken

General Scroll Saw Talk / Wood Choice Question
« on: December 05, 2012, 04:49:35 pm »
What is your choice of wood for most of the projects you create?  When it calls for 1/2", 1/4" or 1/8" wood for instance?  Most of the work I've done is out of 3/4" pine or 1/4" oak or mahogany plywood.  Just curious what longtimers have found to work best.

Thanks,
Ken
