That's a nice thought, but those things are very delicate and would be  cumbersome to try and take on a plane, or expensive to send.  Also, they are so readily available in Germany that if they like them, they probably already have one.

Have you thought about something more portable, like ornaments in German style?  Volker Arnold has lots of them, and they are sold in the US by Kyle Sheffer.  If you just Google Volker Arnold, they will come up.

Good luck, and hope you have a great visit.

Scroller has 2 sets of Underwater Sea Creatures and one of the patterns is for an octopus.  Really cute!  They are intended to be 8" round, but I've shrunk some down for ornaments.

www.scrolleronline.com is their address, and the pattern  is #8695SC for the set of 3, or #8SET10 for all six.
Hope this helps.

I know the feeling.....a few years ago I took one of my DeWalts to the Seattle service center and it came back with the same problems as when I sent it.  I called and complained and they said to bring it back, so I did, even though the place is over 100 miles each way from my house.  The saw came back in the same condition the second time.  Plus, the guy who was getting it our of the back of my van started to lift it by the top arm!!!  I knew at that point that they were never going to be any help to me.

I actually gave up on that saw and bought 4 more of the "gently used" Type 1 DeWalts from area woodworkers.  It's amazing how many people buy tools thinking that they will use them and never do.  They just sit around being ignored!  Between all of those and the new Jet I bought last winter, I should be set for quite some time.

I have the on-off type and love them.  I'm another one that doesn't want to have to hold my foot down the entire time I'm cutting.  I use it just like the damper pedal on the piano....my right foot lightly rests on it until needed, then I push down.  If you learn to just LIGHTLY rest the foot on the pedal, there's no need to actually move your foot off and back on.  It's always there, just waiting.  Just my way of doing it.

Looks really nice!  I've thought of ordering this pattern several times, maybe I need to go ahead and do it.

If you think spruce is a challenge, try cutting some quarter-sawn white oak or some zebrawood!  I find it helps to take "stress breaks" when doing something that's really taxing.

I'm not surprised that you liked the Olson Mach blades....they're my favorite, but sure wish they made smaller than a #3, 'cause then I have to switch to a Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #1.  As you will learn, each type of blade cuts differently, and you have to adjust your cutting.  Also, I don't like the fuzzies that the Flying Dutchman leaves, but I do think they stay sharp longer.

You'll learn which blade works best with each situation.  It depends on the hardness and thickness of the wood as much as how intricate your pattern is.  I like to cut with the saw at about 90-95% speed, and you'll find your favorite too.

Have fun and enjoy your new hobby!

I have a pieced together dust control system very similar to the new Scrollnado, which takes the dust away right by the hole, both at the top and bottom of the table.  Works very well with my Fein vacuum.  They are quite pricey...around $400, and even they don't last forever.  I've been scrolling for about 15 years, and am on my third vacuum.

I use my saw many hours a day, but don't have the vac hooked in with the saw.  As was stated, the constant on-off really shortens the life of the vac, and at that price, I don't want anything to shorten it!

If you want to save on shipping....cause it's quite high from Spain....he can email you the patterns and you can forward them to a print shop if you have one close by.  They can print the larger copies.  You'll want an extra copy anyway, since you wouldn't want to cut your original.

I've done this 3 or 4 times, and they come out great.

I don't see how Norm considers scrolling an addiction....just because I currently have 6 saws and spend most of my day in the shop doesn't prove anything!

Maybe some of the DeWalt Service Centers actually take the saw completely apart, clean and repair it as their website states, but I took one of mine to Seattle - twice - and it came back in the same condition as when I took it...both times.

I'm currently considering purchasing another Jet, just in case they discontinue making it due to so many bad reviews.  If people correctly learned  how to use the new blade clamping system, it's a fantastic saw.

It's pretty sad when a company develops a fantastic new product, but can't bother to train some representatives to show how to use it.   The clamping system does take some getting used to, but when the bottom blade holder is properly installed, it won't fall out even if there isn't any tension on the blade.  All you need to do to install it is just push it in, resting on the 2 small supports....it's very easy.

As to there not being a positive stop in the top blade clamp, there actually is, but it's very small and if you've got the blade inserted too far into the bottom holder, your blade won't be long enough to reach the stop.  As I said, it's small, but at the right side of the top blade holder.

I sure hope they can get some trained people to demo this saw, or sales will probably be so bad they will quit making it, which would be a shame.  It really is an improvement on every other clamping system,  once you learn how to operate it.   I love mine!
