Clockwise/Anti-clockwise

In a couple of books I have on relief cutting it states to scroll clockwise and in cases counter clockwise. Now I presume it's the way you turn the wood, so if I turned the wood from left to right that would be clockwise. Am I right in thinking this, as it is not further explained in the books.

I find it works best to keep the waste area to the right hand side of the blade.  That results in counter clockwise for inside cuts and clockwise for outside cuts.  The direction refers to the lines of the pattern, not the turning direction of the wood. It may work out that way.  I never really noticed.
