General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: college mascots
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:35:15 am »
It seems that every school has a different licensing contract. The cost to license can vary greatly. Some schools are very aggressive in perusing trademark violations. Understandable. The images can be very valuable properties to the schools. Many craft show marketing groups will reject you if you can't show proof that you have licensed the image if it is something they recognize.

Take a look at this sales pitch from a licensing company to high schools. They offer to help license and protect the trademark for high schools. The schools are not even the ones who actually protect their logo. They hire people to do it for them. That kind of tells you how serious they take it. http://ilchq.com/faq/

Hey ablade, I learned something here tonight. I was unaware you could tighten the bolt. I'm comfortable with the Jim Dandy ez lift but I do want to test this so I know to recommend it or not. Thanks for the info.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: blade getting dull
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:15:30 am »
These guys are telling you right. Blades are cheap. You are going to spend a lot of time making a project. Why ruin it or take the enjoyment of your time to save 20 cents. Your instincts were right.

Hi Stanley, thanks for jumping in with the technique you use. I knew guys were doing it somehow I was just not sure what the process was. I will consider emailing the cdr files on a limited one off basis but I have decided not to release them as a general feature. I don't so much mind guys having them I just know I will be opening a can of worms with support. I won't say this is a final decision but at this point that's where I'm at.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Blade breakage
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:47:50 am »
Hi Risse, I think joe might have the right idea. Breaking blades is more often that not a machine problem and not an operator problem. It is possible to have the tension too high but not likely. Most new scrollers tend to under tension the blades. The problem is likely in the clamping components of the saw. Not all saws are created equal. This can actually be a difficult problem to diagnose if you don't have much experience with different saws. When the blades break look at the blades for clues. Are they breaking in the same place every time? Are the blades that do not break severely bent when you remove them? Try to diagnose the clues and see if anything stand out. You may or may not be able to correct the problem depending on the saw and problem but it can't hurt to take a close look. Sorry I can't be more specific but like I said it can be difficult to diagnose.

The pattern vault is a good idea. I'll see what I can come up with. I'm a little concerned about copyright issues so I'll have to give it a bit of thought. Good idea though.

Bulletins and News / Photo uploading tutorial on the way.
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:34:28 am »
I will be doing a demonstration video on uploading pictures to the forums tomorrow or Wednesday.

There are two different ways to post a picture. You can use the insert image tag or upload the picture as an attachment.
The insert image tag has no size restrictions but the image must be hosted on your domain of a photo sharing site.
The attachment has a file size limit of 128K and will be hosted on my server.

I will explain all this completely in the tutorial when I get it finished. It will be a video tutorial and I will post the link in the Bulletins and News forum.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Live Stream
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:27:09 pm »
Hi Chriss, I enjoy doing the live streams but I want to get a bit more organized before the next one. I have already made the live stream page easier to use and I am working on a better way to do the giveaway if I do that again. Had a few viewers that were not able to get their entry submitted in time. Right now my tentative date for the next stream is 4/30/2010 at 9 or 10pm. Still trying to work out the best time for most people to attend. With people coming from all over the world its tough to pick a time. Thanks for asking.

This forum allows users to insert home page links in their profile and signature. I encourage anyone who would like to share their work to do so. If you have a scroll saw, woodworking, personal or craft related home page please share it.

I am moderating the profiles and will ban any user that links to an adult site. Unfortunately this has already happened. It will not be tolerated.

If anyone comes across any thing that is not appropriate for the general community please let me know.

Any links in the profile, signature or inserted in a post will be moderated.

I know that anyone taking the time to read this is going to follow the rules and I need your help keeping the forum family friendly. Please report any abuse.

I will be adding more moderators soon to help. In the mean time click on links with caution. Use good judgment.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Scrollsaw Stand
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:00:31 pm »
Not to worry gary. I need all the help I can get. I agree that its not necessary to bolt the stand to the floor. if you put it on a mobile base make sure its the type that allows the stand to touch the floor when stationary. Just locking wheels won't work. You need a stable base and the locked wheels will allow too much movement.
