Pattern from silhouette

I have a silhouette of a saxophone where the instrument is solid black.  I want to make a pattern of the saxophone in the style Steve Good makes - a fine solid black outline with the interior shaded a light grey.  I followed reply #13 from http://www.stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=13355.0.  The resulting trace was rough - not a smooth line but instead was very jagged.  The line was about 1/8" wide.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on how to get better results would be appreciated.

In inkscape you trace the silhouette then left click on the colour you like for the fill then right click and set stroke on the colour you want for the outline.

Donrob and daveo, thanks for the patterns but I was trying to figure how to do it myself.  loftyhermes, your suggestions gave me enough info that I could do it myself.  I think I figured it out so I can do it in the future.

Here's my pattern.  What do you think?

thats it you have traced the bitmap
now if you want to highlight the internal cuts
select the whole object then
go to
object>object to path
object> break apart
now select  one of the internal parts (you may need to click on it 2 or 3 times at first)
then hover over the colour you want on the colour bar along the bottom of the screen
right click and select "set as fill

daveo, thanks for the advice.  Generally I prefer to colour the wood to keep a light grey so that the background (outside) and the interior cuts are white.  For this pattern, once I had the bitmap traced, I saved the file as plain SVG. I used GIMP to fill the interior.

It may not be the best way but it seems to work for me.
