Tung Oil Finish - Need to Clear Coat?
« on: October 18, 2011, 01:21:39 pm »
I just finished two baskets with Formby's Tung Oil, but now wonder if I should spray a clear coat over this, or can it be left as-is?  It's doubtful that they will be used for food, but maybe apples, oranges, etc.

Hey Crabby, I have never use tung oil, but if it were me, I would use a top coat after the oil has dried. Even tung oil will not protect wood like a good top coat.

Thanks, Dan.  I have always used a top coat, but wasn't sure about it with the tung oil.  BTW, I didn't cut the tung oil, just put it on right out of the can.  Nice finish, but it may take awhile to dry.  Probably should have mixed it.
