I will be starting my first project soon .
« on: August 06, 2010, 07:41:25 pm »
I have been learning how to use my scroll saw and going slow at it . I have been looking at Mr. Good's patterns and think I will make my own and make a chess set . I have always wonted a set that I made and it will be 3D . . I will not rush it and thinking oak for the black side and poplar for the white and make the board match .

hey Muzzlemike, The chess set is pretty ambitious for a first project but I wont try to discourage you. Contact mike at www.mikesworkshop.com. He will advise you about what blades to use.
Poplar would make a good wood for the white pieces. I would use walnut for the black. Oak is very hard to cut especially in the thickness you will need. Walnut is softer and easier to cut. Good luck!

I made two sets a few years ago for my son and son-in-law.
I used hard maple and walnut for both the pieces and the boards.
The boards are the easy part.  ;) Then make a box to keep the pieces in.
It gets kinda boreing cutting the pawns (I had 32 to cut)  but if you go slow and take your time, you will have something to be proud of and that no one else in the world will have.
Good luck and start making saw dust!!

Hey Muzzlemike,  Compound cutting is the neatest thing.  I am still fascinated to pull the finished piece out of the block.  I would try a couple of pieces out of pine first to get the hang of it before I used my "good" wood.  Happy Scrolling...julie

I agree, try it on some pine first. Then you can see how it goes.  8)

A compound cut is brave for a first time...but I say go for it!  Jump in with both feet...but practice on some Pine before getting into the more expensive wood.  Make sure you post a picture or two when done!

I think I will stick to MY definition of a 'compound cut"...

That is when I have to make a "U" turn in a tight space!!!

I like to think If I make a mistake it is just wood . I am not going to get supper decorative on them either . I am being realistic about it this is my first real project . Except for the practice cut peaces my nephews call cars even if they are 2D . I let them have them and play they love it .

Here is a photo of my try at a chess set.
Actually, I lied, I used walnut and oak for the boards.
The boxes are popular and do have lids for them.

Thought this might help and be of some encouragement.
