Hopefully some of the New Zealand friends can tell me about this wood. I had some friends take a trip there and they brought a couple pieces of wood back. The name they gave me is "Totara". Can you tell me anything about it? The pieces I got are about 1/2" x 5" x 24. What kind of scroll projects would be good? I did look it up in Wikipedia. Just looking for any more info. Thanks.

Totara wood, used extensively by the Moari people of NZ for carving and for building thier whare's, it was also used by the europeans when they arived for building and fencing, trees in NZ are now protected but there is still Totara wood to be found, a lot of the fence posts still exist today and are used by wood turner for making vases, it is a very dense timber but not hard, it has a high wax content as well and is very hard to put a finish on as a bloom seems to come through most finishes and leaves a white powder substance on the outside of the wood, the color is a deep red
