Is there any way of lightening up a dark photo to start the pattern process? Thank you, Barry.

Windows photo gallery has an editing tool to brighten a photo.

Barry - after changing the image to Mode Grayscale, try setting Brightness/Contrast to 50/50. If it's still too dark or washed out, try using the edge detection filters or Cartoon to get the edges highlighted.

or use Microsoft Office Picture Manager

next to brightness/contrast this has a midtone adjusting.
maybe not the best, but quick to use.
(ise images, one original, one adjusted.

Sometimes tools have a "gamma" correction curve, woorks good also.
(look for gamma in help of your tool)
