Ask Steve a question. / Re: How to cut things larger than my 20" saw??
« on: February 04, 2015, 09:11:51 am »
The obvious solution is to use spiral blades.  However, on one occasion, since I didn't have any spirals, I inserted the blade in backwards.  I only had a very few cuts, so I was able to finish the project.  Wouldn't have wanted to make this standard practice but it served in a pinch.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Polymer clay

I wonder if 275 degrees isn't a bit high.  The instructions on the FIMO clay says 230 degrees for 30 minutes.  It also says not to exceed 265 or 30 minutes.  Check the instructions on the brand clay you are using.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Cutting Music CDs
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:06:02 pm »
I tried cutting a few CD's  a few years ago, but gave it up because there weren't many patterns that would work with the center hole.  I sandwiched the CD (or any plastic) between two pieces of scrap plywood.  I used a FD Polar blade.  Not sure of the size but #3,5 or 7 should work.  You need to go slow so that the plastic doesn't get hot and weld itself back together.  Been there, done that.  Experiment with the speed (spm) until you are satisfied.  Good luck.

(but my trouble with the text is on the home page and when your in a categories section like when you go to pattern request or brag forum ETC. i find theses pages are very hard for me to see.i do need a some what high contrast do to my poor eyesight. being color blind a long with it doesn't help very hard for me to read the text on the grey/silver background. i don't expect you or anyone else to make changes for one or two people but i thought i would let you know)

I like the new format.  I agree with Newfie.  I too need the highter contrast because of my eyesight probems.  Keep up the good work.

I saw this piece up close and personal yesterday, and I can tell you that the picture just does not do it justice.  Brian did a phenomenal job.  It was beautiful.   Thanks, Brian.

Computer questions / Re: free program

I use Irfanview.  Load the jpg or bmp file then go to Images-effects-edge detection. you will end up with a negative picture.  Go to images-negative.  Voila, there you are.

A problem I have experienced is when I don't have enough contrast between the blade and the pattern.  A red line pattern is a big help.  A filled-in sillouette  pattern is sometimes hard to follow, especially black.

I use Irfanvies.  When i click "print" I can locate the pattern on the page by choosing the left and top margins.  Works very well.  You can resize patterns as well as several other options.  BTW Irfanview is a free program.  Silver Sliver

I recently installed Window 7 Professional (64 bit) on my laptop.  My HP Deskjet 940c works fine with the new system.  I went into Control Panel, Printers.  I clicked on "Add a Printer" and then looked for HPDeskjet 1000.  It was there.  BTW 1000 comes before 940, LOL.  I did not find anything for your scan jet.  You might try that.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade control
« on: December 15, 2011, 04:50:33 pm »
I wonder if you may be pushing the wood too hard.  If you are used to pushing the wood into the less aggressive blade with a certain pressure, you may be using the same pressure on the more aggressive blade.  Let the blade do the cutting.  Just a light push is all that is needed.

Sorry, have not been there.  I will be traveling to Fargo next spring to granddaughers wedding.  That may not be convenient because I will be with my son and his wife.  I have the same question for you, do you ever get to SF?  If so, look me up.  You can email me at ?DuaneGenzlinger@gmail.com?. Leave off the question marks.  Duane aka Silver Sliver.
