Plans have arrived, just under two weeks from hawaii to UK. Excellent service. Clayton said allow 4-6 weeks. Plans run to eighteen pages plus eight pages of instructions. Will be spending the next few nights reading and rereading them! Will order the ply need later today. I will be posting my progress as I go along. I will also be keeping a detailed record of my progress plus hours spent which may be of help to any others mad enough to attempt one of these!

I can't wait to see the progression of this clock! Good luck, Malc.
-
I am really looking forward to seeing your progress. I am planning on building another one this year. Good Luck!

Which one did you build?
-
I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this as well. If I ever step out of my comfort zone I want to try a clock too.
Bill

Good luck malc, I was just on his site the other day and almost ordered Galileo's Bicycle or Ferguson's Mechanical Paradox, but I chickened out. I really appreciate that you are going to post pics on your progress and let us know how difficult they are, I would like to try one.
Mark

Good luck! I'll be watching your progress too. :)

Here is the first wheel for the clock, it is the escapement wheel about eight inck diameter and cut to within 1/64 in. I promise not to bore you with each wheel cut, just thought you might like to see the first one.

NOT BORING!!!
-
Cool beans, Malc. I can?t speak for others, but feel free to ?bore? me all you want; I?m living vicariously through you on this project.
Bill
-
I agree...post every picture of every step...this is gonna be fun to watch.
-
i'm not going to build a clock but i'm going to enjoy this so go ahead & bore me. that is some nice cutting on those circles
-
I have cut the escape wheel pinion and the third wheel. Now comes the long work of getting the two to run together, it will involve slowly rotating the pair and removing any imperfections from their teeth then sanding each tooth with 400grit sandpaper and finally polishing each tooth, probably about four hours work.

The wheels are cut from 1/4 in and 1/2 in birch ply the frame will be from pine.

Thanks for the postings. I won't be bored either, keep them coming.

Looks like you have been busy. Looks awesome, Thanks for posting. 8)

Some more bits! Escapement wheel stained, center wheel, third wheel, several pinions, wind click mechanism, pendulum rod and centre of pendulum bob, pendulum crutch. Still lot to do, then a lot of sanding and polishing.

You are doing a bang-up job on all those little gear and pinion teeth!!!
That is the one thing that stops me from trying a clock. Just trying to keep all the teeth smooth and even so they will mesh would drive me to drink water!!
Rog
-
i bet those little gears were fun
-
Wow. Lots and lots of little pieces, nice work. :)
-
That must take a lot of care and patience Malc, great work! I would end up being a patient! Don't drink the water Rog! :)
-
The precision is amazing. I'm impressed by both your skill and your patience! Nice job.
-
I too will be following your progress closely!
I just received the plans for the Celestial Mechanical Calendar. So far the plans are excellent, well thought out and clear.
I'm just beginning to lay out the frame and locate all of the arbor hole locations. I have to admit it is a little intimidating. I worry about being off in drilling an arbor hole by the slightest amount thinking about how that will ultimately effect the gear performance.
I will try to learn from your efforts!

Yes the arbor holes are vital. Before drilling I use a sharp spike to mark the EXACT centre of the hole then using a pillar drill to ensure a vertical hole I drill slowly using a GOOD QUALITY brad point drill. Any other way I can help I will, but bear in mind I am on a learning curve too!!!

Hope to have some more pictures soon, had some trouble cutting the frame. First one I made was from pine and proved not to be strong enough as the thin curled arms running across the grain were too weak. I then cut another, as a test exercise out of MDF but it was 1mm out of square, this was enough to make the wheel arbors bind so no good. I have now cut one out of oak and this one is square! I will start fitting the gear train wheel by wheel and making adjustments as I go along. More news soon and HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!
Malc
-
keep on keepin on you'll be proud when it is finished
-
Glad your back in the shop again Malc. I was afraid you were snowed in somewhere.
I finished my frame using baltic birch ply. I'm currently making all the arbors and caps for the arbors. Following the plans on my project have me doing all of this before cutting my first gear, so there's no way to tell how accurate the frame is at this point. What the heck, I'm having lots of fun with it.
Happy Holidays!
-
Its coming on! All the gears now run with each other, some still need staining and the teeth polishing but we are getting there!!

Wow....just....wow........if only I could......
-
malc, I just looked back through all the post and It is amazing to watch it come together from your first gear to now. The video was phenomenal. Thank you for taking the time to post the process. It definitely shows your talent. As for me, I am still to intimidated by the precision of everything, maybe after I get a few more hours under my belt. Thanks again, it's awesome.

Coming along, nearly finished now, about a week of testing then it can be moved to it's final position. I think 'er indoors will be pleased to have my building jig out of the dining room! Time keeping is about two minutes a day at the moment but I know I can get it much better that that. I will post pictures of her when she is in situ on the wall. Note it is changing to a her as I become more endeared with her.

I agree with Chachi, we need the smiley he talked about.

something like this?
The next "Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts" (http://www.scrollsawer.com/) magazine will have a plan from Clayton Boyer included. I'm looking forward to that one.

You realy did yourself proud there mate. It looks great. Thanks for sharing as you went along.

My task is complete! Clock now fully working and installed. I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as I have making it. Unfortunately I have now got the taste for clocks and am pouring over plans for the next one, a grandfather to stand in my hall. It is fitted with the complex 'Grasshopper' escapement and I think will test my scrolling skills to the limit. Final two videos are in this post.

Wow Malc that is great you did a heck of a job <clapping smiley>
-
Thanks for taking us along Malc. It is great to see and hear work work. 8) It all came together beautifully! I could have said like "clock work" but I didn't, did I? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ::)
-
wonderful. i can see what you meant about fine tuning on this. on that long u shaped looking
piece there isn't much room for error. pat yourself on the back since we aren't there to do it.
-
That is simply amazing. I have looked at several of his patterns and videos and still hesitate. I'd be afraid to dust it.
-
I have really enjoyed watching you create this clock. I am getting ready to start another one.
-
Thank you all for following my progress on this project. I am sure it was your enthusiasm that kept me pushing on. During the entire build I never felt I was on my own. I hope to soon start on building my 'tertius' Grandfather clock with a 'grasshopper' escapement and will keep you informed of my progress. Once again thanks to you all.
