General Scroll Saw Talk / You've got to be kidding me!
« on: January 20, 2012, 08:35:54 pm »
3 years ago my brother bought me a scroll saw for Christmas.  It has been in a corner of my garage since although I have used it only a few times.  I have been woodworking for about 12 years building furniture, cabinets, bigger items really etc.  I decided last year around Sept to make quicker smaller projects so I decided to pull my scroll saw out of the corner and try it again!  Um,  can you say hooked instantly?  I have made about 100 items or so and given most away as gifts and everyone has just been very happy and complimentary of my work.  I have mainly made things from This site.

I have wanted to upgrade m scroll saw to make project production easier and scrolling in general easier and more fun.  Today, I bought the Delta on sale at Woodcraft for $349.  I know a lot of you know about this deal.  I just couldn't pass it up.  My wife insisted that I buy it!!  I spent this afternoon putting it together.  I fired it up and cut a puzzle with it!  YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?  The difference in that saw and my old one is not even comparable!  I can actually tension a blade now!!!

I wish I would have done it sooner but today was my lucky day because Woodcraft only had 1.

One happy guy right now.  Sorry my post is so long!  I now understand scroll saw heaven.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade control
« on: December 15, 2011, 03:21:21 pm »
I hope I'm not asking too many questions but I am learning.

I am having trouble controlling some blades.  I don't have any problem with most of the Olson blades but I do have more trouble with the FD blades.  The FD tend to "fly" all over the place.  They are sharp and last pretty long but are harder to control.  I am not giving up on either blade manuf.

Am I doing something wrong??  Is it the tension? Or is it just the nature of the two different manuf?  Am I going too fast?  I know it may be hard to help me but I figured someone has had this come up.

Thanks for your help in advance.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Good or bad news???
« on: December 02, 2011, 12:50:30 pm »
I was in my shop this morning about to scroll some more ornaments and my scroll saw won't turn on.  It's a Hitachi CW-40 and I've been doing a lot of cutting with it lately.  I can't even find a repair facility in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Maybe it's a sign that I need to upgrade.  That's what I told the wifie.

Introduce Yourself. / Hello from Texas
« on: December 01, 2011, 08:38:41 am »
Hi Everyone,  I have been woodworking for about 12 years but recently started loving scrolling.  That's all I seem to and want to do now.  Steve's site and videos have been very helpful and terrific.  Thank you Steve for your leadership.  I want to also thank everyone who posts so that newbie's like me can continue to learn.  I'm been scrolling with a Hitachi CW-40 I got as a gift years ago.  I'd sure like to upgrade soon.  There is a ton of info about EX-21s and the 788.  I have "permission" to buy the 788, but don't have permission to buy the EX-21.  Torn at the moment.  I'm having fun with what I have!  Great hobby and everyone enjoys the gifts I have given them made on the scroll saw.

Thanks,

Chris

Ask Steve a question. / 1/2" MDO
« on: December 01, 2011, 07:55:32 am »
Steve, do you have a recommendation on a blade to use on 1/2" sign board?  It has veneered paper on both sides and I'm having trouble with it.  I've used an FD-TC No. 5 but very slow to cut.  By the way,  I enjoy your website and emails.

Thanks,

Chris
