Brag Forum / Bot #2 off and walking

I finished the second "Bot" this morning.  One more to to.   This one was a little more difficult for me.  But lots of fun to get it going.

Been using the 3M Super 77 since I started scrolling and was always happy with it until the last two cans I purchased.  Then the patterns started lifting up while I was scrolling.  Do not know why, but decided to try other products.  I bought a can of Loctite High Performance 200.  Didn't read the instructions until I got home, of course, and it says to spray both surfaces!  Now that is a real pain in the rear end.  It works great, but too much trouble.  So I will try something else next time.

I showed this on Scroll Saw Village, but there are some here that do not go there, and it was so much fun I thought I would share them here.  This is a first for me.  I have been wanting, for a long time to make a wooden geared clock. But, not sure I could do it.  While looking at plans a while back on the internet I came across Clayton Boyer's site.  He has plans for three "Bot" (robots).  They looked like a lot of fun to try to build and I thought they would give me some indication of how difficult it is to cut gears.  Here is where I found them:  http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/robotlaboratory.htm

This is the first one complete that I made:

and here is a short video of it "CB Walking Bot" walking;

I have the other two all cut and ready to start assembly this weekend.  This is one of my most fun project.  I now have the first one trained to go to frig and get me a beer! ;D

I have more confidence now that I may be able to make a clock.

How is this coming?  I love model ships and certainly have a huge respect for those that can do.  I started a wooden kit of the little sale boat they put Captain Bligh on in Mutiny on the Bounty, many years ago.  The hull is still sitting here half finished.  It was a lot of work and it is a kit.  Doubt I ever finish it.

I use to think I had to run my saws a full speed all the time.  Then one day it came to me, I don't run any other equipment with variable speed at full speed all the time just like I don't run them at the slowest speed all the time.  So I slowed  down and found I enjoyed sawing much more.  That is why they are variable speed.  I There are times for full speed but now I normally run somewhere in the middle.  My saws will probably last longer also.

Ya, that is true.  Last time I had him send me plans it was a little over $6.  I guess you could also copy them to a dics or something and take them to a copy shop.  Course I live out in the country and it would cost me around $6 in fuel to get to the copy shop and back.

I have the one DW is talking about, all cut out (finished cutting it in March 2015) but I never finished it as in finishing sanding and applying a finish)  I drug it out the other day and decided I would finish it up this year.  It is a fun cut.  If you decide to get the plans, I would recommend getting the paper copy as opposed to electronic.  I ordered the electronic file, and could not get a good print out of them.  If I remember right it was the difference in paper sizes between Spain and the US.  The guy that has the site is a great guy to deal with.  I have several of his plans.

Looks like a nice saw and if it is as good as the Ex, and I am sure it is, they have a winner.  Although I doubt is I buy another saw, in my lifetime, this would certainly be one I would look hard at.  I have an Ex so I know they are nice.  They didn't quite meet their goal on price.  When I first read about the saw, there was a comment that it would be a little cheaper than the Ex was.

My only, negative, not really negative, just my opinion, I think the little angle gauge would be a waste for me.  In the years I have had my Ex, I have tilted the head once.  A compass worked fine.  I have one of those little gauges, I use it occasionally, and if I do not remove the battery when not in use, the battery run down. There is a memory in it that needs a little juice.   I don't know how hard it is to remove that gauge to get to the battery, or maybe that problem is not an issue anymore.  I have had the gauge a long time.  At a minimum I would hope that gauge is just a clip on that is easy to remove, because then you could use it on other machines.  I use mine on the table saw mostly.  And of course, if I was in the market for a new saw, that item surely would not keep me from buying one of their new saws.

I really hope their saw is a great success, because I bought my Ex from Seyco and they are great people to deal with.  I want to see them keep scroll saws in their business.

Richard, go online to:  http://www.scrollsaws.com/

On the left side of the screen go down the list of items under "Reviews" click on "DeWalt Tune up"

Scroll down about 1/2" page and there is an article on adjusting the tension....   I do not own a DeWalt any more so I don't know if it helps you but worth a read and try.

Well, my first guess would be not enough tension on the blade.  Also, when you do a sharp turn, you need to give the blade a pause to catch up.  Watch the blade when you turn you will see it does not turn a quickly as you make the turn.  Pause a fraction of a second and you will see it the blade "come around" to the new direction, provided the tension is right.  The thicker the wood the longer the pause required.

I have read posts where the tension mechanism on DeWalts can lose it ability do give adequate tension and I think there is an adjustment that can be make.  Maybe some DeWalt owner on here will speak about that.
