Wood for Bookmarks

Hi Steve -

How do you get 1/8' wood for bookmarks?  Would you use veneer?

My experience is ..DO NOT use veneer.  Use plywoods and you can get it online at lots of reputable dealers.  I actually use 1/16" plywood from sloans or wildwood designs for book marks.  They do have some 1/32" ply as well which works quite well.

I have used 1/32" ply for book marks. You can stack cut them 10 to 16 at a time!

Veneer didn't work for me when I tried, it was brittle. 1/16 or 1/32 ply works really well, you can find it at a hobby shop (it is used in model making). I have a hobby shop much closer and with better hours then a lumber source.

I have also made a few bookmarks by gluing pieces together to form a block then taking thin slices off with a band saw. I didn't cut anything into these, but the looked cool with stripes of different wood. 1 lesson I learned when doing it was to flatten the block after each slice. That way each bookmark had one flat side and 1 that was a little wavy from my cutting, only one side to have to fix.

I have some 1/16" x 2" cedar left over from some ripping I had to do. Going to try some bookmarks with that just to see how it works. I like your idea MrsN. I bet that does look good.

Thanks everyone for the help.  I thought maybe 1/8" was the thinnest ply available.  I will have to search a little closer.  I will try sloans and wildwood design.

I would think the cedar if it is wrc (western red cedar) would be much to soft and brittle for book marks.

I bought some .3mm plywood for 2.00sf at a lo0cal plywood company. Here in San Bernardino, CA.
Thats all the sell is plywood and related products.
