Beginner tip - Drilling holes

Drilling holes may seem pretty straight forward but there are ways that you can improve the holes. The thing that I think is most important is to put a backer board under your work so that there is something for the drill to cut through when it exits your scroll work. Drilling through to the same spot all the time will cause a jagged exit hole and make it harder to thread the blade. This is especially true if you are drilling through packing tape.

I used to use the clear packing tape but one day I ran out of it and used the green painters tape. Since then I have switched to the painters tape since it is not as slippery as the packing tape. I also found that any kind of tape will do...the manufacturer puts something in the glue that prevents the tape from sticking to itself. Tape serves 2 purposes; 1) it holds the stacked pieces together and 2) will act as a lubricant to help prevent burning.

Hope this helps...Keith
