Looks good.  The wood, not the gumballs.

Good Job!  I made a few for my Grankids and dyed them with cake decorating dye dissolved in alcohol.

Thanks guys.  Crusty, I thought of painting them to, but I felt it might be better to use a food safe product since they would be in contact with the gum (at least inside).  I read somewhere else about using cake icing dye mixed with alcohol and decided to give it a try.  I gave them to the kids at Christmas and they haven't faded yet.  I made them out of poplar, so the colors are a little blotchy, but it seems fairly appropriate to the project.  I have had several requests and have made a few more since then and everybody seems to want the colors.  I think your in natural wood looks great to!

Those all look great! I have them on my list for next week.
RE: food color in alcohol...any precautions or just go with my 'gut' as far as mixing?
How about storing any leftover color? Seems cheap enough to pitch rather than try to store.

I didn't use regular food coloring.  It is the coloring intended to use is cake icing.  You have to make it a little stronger than your first impression, but it is inexpensive and I haven't found it worth saving.  Perhaps if you were dying a whole bunch of projects, but I usually only do a few at a time.

I read somewhere that if you take waterbased acrylic paints and really thin them out, it will give you the same affect as staining them. I am going to try it
